Chapter 237
Chapter 237
The next day, Jessica, who had stayed up for several nights in a row, was late.
2063
She drove hurriedly to the company parking lot and instinctively glanced to the side, but didn’t see the familiar Cullinan. She thought, ‘Did Brian leave
because he couldn’t wait? Or did he not come at all?‘
Jessica suddenly realized what she was thinking and turned pale. She didn’t know she had become so dependent on him.
The more Jessica thought about it, the more defeated she felt. She rushed into the elevator, went up to her office, and asked Sana to bring her all recent projects so as to numb herself with work.
However, less than half an hour into handling the work, she received photos from Madeline.
Madeline: [Jessica, Brian is so thoughtful. I just told him he didn’t need to see me off for a business trip, but he took Jacob and waited outside my room early in the morning, insisting on driving me to the airport himself.]
Jessica stared coldly at the message and the attached photo.
In the picture, Brian was focused on driving, while Jacob sat in the rear child seat, looking at Madeline with reluctance. A hand with sparkly pink nail polish rested gently on his shoulder. Sunlight poured through the car window, making the photo look so heart–warming.
Another message from Madeline came in. Madeline: [Jessica, Jacob hugged me and wouldn’t let me go–he was so sad he almost cried. Can you teach me how to comfort him?]
A new photo followed–in the bustling parking lot, Jacob clung tightly to Madeline’s calves.
Jessica slammed her phone face–down on the desk, her fingers trembling uncontrollably. So this was why Brian hadn’t come this morning. He was too busy seeing off his new lover to care about Jessica.
Jessica laughed self–mockingly. If it weren’t for the two children she was carrying, she would have been completely forgotten by him already.
Sometimes Jessica really felt pathetic. She had seen Brian’s true colors clearly, yet she couldn’t help being deceived by his false front.
She couldn’t help wondering if Jacob’s previous obedience in front of her had also been an act. In reality, his favorite must be Madeline.
Jessica felt like a failure. The more she thought, the sadder she became, and she weakly buried her head in her hands, overcome by exhaustion.
Meanwhile, Madeline wasn’t angry about not getting a reply. She didn’t believe Jessica could remain indifferent after seeing these photos.
“Maddie, do you have to take more photos?” Jacob asked.
Seeing Madeline keep holding her phone, Jacob thought she was reluctant to part with him and wanted more group photos. Although he was tired, he tried to smile, thinking this might be the last time he saw Maddie.
A flash of irritation crossed Madeline’s eyes, but she pretended to be gentle. “No, I’m replying to a message. Are you tired? Why don’t you go back to the car and rest?”
“I’m okay, not too tired. Let me walk you to the terminal,” Jacob said considerately.
Madeline’s expression froze. She didn’t want Jacob to follow her at all.
With the plane about to take off and still no chance to be alone with Brian, Madeline looked at him anxiously.
Brian directly pushed her suitcase toward her and said, “The elevator is ahead, Carry your luggage and go. I need to take Jacob to kindergarten.”
Seeing he didn’t want to keep her at all, Madeline said sadly, “Mr. Atkinson, do you really hate seeing me this much?”
Chapter 237.
Brian thought for a moment and replied, “More or less.”
Jacob looked at Brian in surprise. He didn’t understand why Brian disliked Madeline so much.
After sensing Jacob’s gaze, Brian said nothing, just reached out to stroke his head and said, “Let’s go.”
Jacob was led away by Brian. He turned back to Madeline and said, “Goodbye, Maddie.”
“Goodbye, Jacob.” Madeline waved with a smile, showing no sign of displeasure.
Jacob tilted his head, feeling that Maddie seemed angry.
After leaving the airport, Brian noticed Jacob lost in thought in the backseat and asked, “What are you thinking about?”
“Dad, will Maddie really never come to our house again?” Jacob hesitated before asking.
Brian frowned but didn’t answer directly. Instead, he asked, “Jacob, do you really think Madeline is good to you?”
Jacob was about to nod instinctively when Brian added, “Is she better to
you
than your
mom?”
Jacob replied without hesitation, “Of course not.”
Madeline was nice to him, but she couldn’t compare to Jessica.
Brian studied him for a moment. After confirming he was telling the truth, he felt relieved. Jacob hadn’t been completely deceived by Madeline.
“In that case, don’t mention her again, for your mom’s sake, okay?” Brian said solemnly. He didn’t want Jessica to be hurt by Madeline even after she left.
Jacob wanted to ask why, but remembering Jessica’s obvious dislike of Madeline before, he fell silent.
He thought he had done something wrong. He knew Jessica didn’t like Madeline, yet he had clung to her–no wonder Jessica hadn’t forgiven him.
