The carriage was ready, with no guard or knight to accompany them. Lucian offered Erin his hand and helped her sit in the carriage before following her inside.
At the signal, the coachman rode away. Inside the carriage, Erin and Lucian were sitting facing each other. While Erin was still conflicted with the chat she had with her brother, Lucian picked up the blanket and put it over her.
She observed him closely, his expression serious as he cared for her. ’Care? He cares for everyone.’
Once he set the blanket around her, his gaze met hers. He could feel her gaze was not that of a happy woman but a little sad, with something else in it, as if she wanted to ask him various questions.
"Do you want to talk about something?" he asked.
Taken aback, she shook her head. ’Maybe I am just being hasty. I shall wait for the day. He is taking me away; maybe he will express his feelings when we are alone.’
The carriage continued to move towards their destination. Seeing her quiet, Lucian asked, "Are you feeling cold?"
Erin shook her head. "No." She turned her gaze away to look out of the window.
Lucian simply looked at her, clearly sensing sadness behind her calmness. He stood up from his place and sat next to her. Erin was taken aback and looked at him.
"This way I can explain you the territory as we pass by," he said and looked out of the window, "Along the way, you will see different parts of the estate.
’Maybe he is just trying to be more comfortable with me. Having a good conversation is good enough as well.’ A light smile painted her lips as she looked outside. "What’s on that side?" she asked, looking at the tall trees. "Forest?"
He hummed and added, "In winter, that part is not accessible. Once winter is gone and all the snow melts, I will take you there."
"It will take time then. Winter is long here," she commented.
"Three more months for spring to arrive," he added.
"You are also new to the Northeast, so you must have studied this place to know it well?" she asked.
He nodded. "Once I was old enough to understand things, Mother and Father told me about my parents and what happened here. They would always talk about what kind of place the Northeast is. Even without seeing it in person, I could almost imagine it, as if the essence of this place runs in my blood."
"Did it feel like home when you returned here?" she asked, curious to know his thoughts. free𝑤ebnovel.com
"Maybe. I was just trying to find traces of familiarity, traces of my parents. But the thought that this place used to be my home, and that I was born here, was enough to make me feel like it’s my home," he replied, as if ready to open his heart to her.
"They say that wherever a person goes, they remain attached to their roots," she commented. "That’s the case for you."
Lucian hummed.
"Are you happy to be back here?"
Erin looked at him, feeling puzzled. ’Only the two of them?’
She didn’t know why, but all of a sudden, she felt nervous and lowered her gaze, not knowing what to say or how to react. Just for the two of them? It sounded kind of intimate to her, and the way he looked at her felt... different.
