Felicity's comment was meant as a casual jest, but Miles' silence cast an awkward pall over the conversation.
After an uncomfortable lull, Felicity widened her eyes and stammered, "You... you can't possibly tell me that... that was your only time, right?"
After all, he was nearly in his thirties!
Having spent years abroad, Felicity was no stranger to the party scene and had naturally assumed that Miles was experienced with numerous women.
Yet, now, seeing him silent, she was taken aback.
"How can you be so casual about this?" Miles finally spoke, irritation lacing his tone. "Felicity, do you understand what this means? It's something that's meant for married couples!"
She nodded earnestly, "I didn't understand before, but I do now."
Felicity examined him before whispering, "Don't you ever think about it?"
"Felicity!"
"Langston, you're not... there's nothing wrong with you, is there?" she asked, her gaze darting toward his midsection.
Miles immediately covered her eyes and pushed her back into the car seat!
"I've said what I needed to say. If you don't want to get married, I won't force you," he stated, his voice heavy, refusing to broach the topic again.
Felicity glanced out the car window, trying to change the subject, "Yeah, okay. Let's not talk about it anymore."
...
After dropping Felicity off, Miles felt restless and decided against going home alone, driving instead to Bay Residence.
His parents were there; at least it would be lively.
Upon entering, he found Everett massaging Dorothy's shoulders. They both looked up in surprise, "You're back so early?"
Dorothy chuckled at her husband's comment, "What are you saying? This is Langston's home, of course, he can come back whenever he wants."
It felt disrespectful to Felicity to share such private matters.
Hesitating, he shook his head again, "It's nothing."
Dorothy, sensing her son's reluctance, didn't press further. She patted his back and offered a comforting smile, "Then get some rest. When you're ready to talk, I'm here to listen."
"Okay."
As Miles took off his suit jacket and slipped into his slippers, Dorothy started to walk back to the living room. Suddenly, he felt compelled to speak, "Mom! Actually, there is something... I want to ask you."
"Yes? Go ahead," Dorothy returned to his side.
Miles fidgeted, the conflict evident on his face.
After a long pause, he awkwardly broached the subject, "I have this friend, a guy, who... had a thing with a girl. But now, my friend has a girlfriend, and the girl has a boyfriend. What should they do?"
"Is this girl... Felicity?"
