Time ticked away, and Miles remained silent. But his silence spoke volumes.
She just knew!
Felicity tugged at her lips, pushing back the surge of emotions threatening to spill over, and continued with a carefree smile, “Langston, even a laid-back person like me knows marriage isn’t child’s play. And you, of all people! I don’t need you to take responsibility, much less marry me.”
After all, if she were to drag him into her mess, that would be terribly unfair.
Miles stood opposite her, silent for a long while before finally asking, “What about you?”
“What do you mean?”
“Do you love me? The way a woman loves a man, not just as a friend.”
Caught off guard by his question, Felicity blurted out without thinking, “Of course not!”
“My feelings for you are akin to the admiration and fondness one has for an older brother, nothing more!”
With that single statement, any other possibilities between them were extinguished.
Miles lowered his gaze, his thoughts inscrutable.
He was as hard to read as his father!
“Langston?”
Just as Felicity was about to move closer to ask, her eyes met Miles’ intense gaze.
He frowned, “Is Calvin the reason you won’t marry me?”
Miles suspected that her reluctance to part with Calvin, a man with charming dimples, was the real issue.
If he hadn’t mentioned it, Felicity wouldn’t have even considered it!
“You’re going to marry him?”
“Yeah! We’re both not big on ceremonies, so who knows? We might just decide to elope one of these days! After all, living together is pretty much the same as being married.”
“…” He rested his hand on the steering wheel, his pale wrist peeking out from the cuff of his white shirt, “You and he are already living together?”
Felicity nodded without hesitation, “Yes!”
“…”
“Haha, Langston, you surely didn’t stay chaste just because of that little incident five years ago, right?”
After all, a man at Miles’ age is at his prime in terms of energy and needs.
Considering Calvin would rather die than live without the company of women, she couldn’t believe Miles hadn’t been with Esther.
