But the next moment, something went wrong.
The first few purple mechs exploded just fine, violent blasts tearing through the metal and sending tremors through the fortress. But instead of creating a void hole like last time, the metallic walls around them pulsed. Glowed. And then absorbed the explosions.
Damon’s eyes widened. "Shit."
It was adapting.
He should have known. His opponent was not stupid. They were not going to fall for the same trick twice. "Fuck. Let’s go. Let’s get out of here one way or the other." Damon signalled for the group to follow him as he started heading further down the hall.
Their escape from this place was looking increasingly bleak. The more Damon thought about it, their only option out of this place should be by using something they found here. They had already found a lot of rare materials and weird items. Wouldn’t one such room contain explosives or some shit?
Damon’s mind was running on fumes and instinct now. He turned a sharp corner and burst through another lab door. He ransacked it from top to bottom while others kept the golems at bay.
"Blood Reign, come on. Is there anything I can use? Can you sense anything at all?"
Blood Reign did not give any response. Damon did not dare. He was sure of it. One of these rooms had to contain something useful. He started ransacking one lab after another. There was a plan mutation lab, there was a mechanical limb lab, and there was even an artificial mana core lab.
There were all sorts of things in the laboratories, but he still couldn’t get his hands on any explosives. Things continued in this way when the group coincidentally arrived at the same spot they had started. It looked like the whole damn thing was circular in shape.
Then came the obvious question. What was there at the center?
Damon was pretty sure the answer to their problem lay at the center of it all. If the long corridor formed the outer boundary, the shorter corridor and the labs formed the inner boundary, then what was at the center?
The only way to know the answer was to try and breakthrough the damn wall. Damon used some purple bots to break the inner wall in the same way, but once again, something unexpected happened.
The inner wall completely refused to budge.
This time, instead of denting or melting or cracking under the explosion, the inner wall reflected the energy. A shimmering hexagonal pattern flared across its surface, like a rippling shield. Damon was blown back several meters, skidding across the floor as the explosion that should have cracked the fortress barely even left a scorch mark.
"I understand the outer wall being strong. This thing doesn’t want a breach, but the inner wall is even stronger. So something important is present inside the wall!"
Damon’s eyes gleamed. He was strong enough to break through one wall with sheer force, he should be able to do the same again. He was not going to give up here.
