"What did you just call me?" Mendoza sneered. "What did you call me, you pathetic fool? Do you know what breakpoint I am currently at? Do you know what my ice affinity is? You think you are still stronger than me? Hmph!"
Mendoza coldly snorted. He then insta cast six long ice spears that circled him. The spears formed with brutal sharpness, each one hissing as the surrounding frost thickened, crackling with deadly intent.
"I’m not the same Mendoza you used to spar with," he said. "Look at that leaderboard. I’ve broken through the fifth breakpoint. And you? You’re still clinging to scraps, chasing the shadow of a woman who wouldn’t even look twice at you in the real world."
Nevin didn’t flinch. He didn’t move. He simply stared at Mendoza, his breathing steady. "Fine. You are all powerful, I admit. I can never reach the heights you have broken through to. Then you should have no trouble coming and helping out your fellow clan members."
Mendoza’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t respond. A few feet behind him, Mathew exchanged a glance with another guild member. A few of them had started paying closer attention. "What happened, Nevin? Where is Sylvara?"
Nevin quickly explained how they had come across a hidden dungeon that had abruptly swallowed them. He altered the events slightly, concealing the truth that they had gone to find the cosmic vessel on their own.
"It is probably a 30-player or 50-player dungeon, and if we all band together, we should be able to clear it and claim the rewards and achievements." Nevin knew he was purposefully misleading them, but he did not care. Sylvara’s life was on the line. Even if told a hundred lies, he couldn’t care less about it.
"A hidden raid dungeon? This could be amazing for our guild. I have heard that rewards from a hidden dungeon were all high-end. There should even be a high chance for a legendary item to drop!" One of the elders quickly chimed in, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of greed and excitement.
The murmurs spread fast. The mention of legendary loot had a magnetic effect. Several other members who had been indifferent up to now began stepping closer and listening intently.
"I heard we can get special titles and high-tier treasure chests!"
"Yes, we need to prepare immediately and head out to take a look. If Sylvara says it’s important, I am very sure our guild will benefit a lot from it."
All the assembled guild members immediately began agreeing with each other and preparing to go. Nevin suppressed the bitterness rising in his chest. It wasn’t Sylvara’s safety that moved them. It was loot. Fame. Rankings. But if that’s what it took to rally them, then so be it.
Mendoza, too, was silent for a long moment. Then he scoffed. "Fine. I’ll go. If there’s a hidden dungeon waiting to be cleared, then I’ll be the one claiming the MVP rewards."
Nevin nodded stiffly. "Great. Then let’s move fast. The longer we delay, the more unstable that place will become. If the entrance to the dungeon disappears, then we might lose a golden opportunity!"
Everybody’s eyes shone with dollar signs as they quickly started gearing themselves up and getting ready to set out. They were double-checking their inventories, buffing weapons, distributing potions, even laughing as if this were just another high-reward raid.
Nevin clenched his fists. If they knew what lay beyond that entrance...they wouldn’t be smiling. Not one of them. Fuck it. It did not matter. As long as he could get them there. Their only hope was to somehow break that damn thing with numbers. "Sylvara, hold on for a few more minutes..."
A couple more mentions of legendary rewards got everyone ready and at the doorstep in less than 10 minutes, and it was finally time to leave. Nevin let out a small sigh. He was worried if these people would even come, but somehow this part went smoothly. "Let’s go. I will lead the way. The dungeon entrance is in this direction."
