Nell listened to Gideon speak so warmly of their family and grinned. She said softly, “Gideon… thank you.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Why the sudden thanks?”
Nell lay her head on his shoulder and said, “I was once stuck in such a dark place and thought that I’d never find the light ever again. I thought my life was just going to be me aimlessly stumbling about until I met you. You gave me a new reason to live for, you gave me warmth and love. For that, I really am thankful, my dear. Thank you for showing me a world full of love. Thank you for giving me a home filled with happiness.”
Gideon’s heart melted as he listened to her say all that softly. He hugged her even tighter. “If you really want to thank me, do it by spending the rest of your life with me.”
He then leaned down and locked lips with her. Nell did not reject the kiss and closed her eyes, relishing in the sweet moment.
After a long while, Gideon let her go while breathing heavily.
Noticing his dazed expression, she asked, “What’s wrong?”
Gideon’s voice was raspy and he gently caressed her face, “Go to sleep first. I’m going to take a shower.”
“Didn’t you just shower?” It suddenly clicked in her head and her face flushed red. She pushed him away screaming, “Ah! Just go!”
Only then did Gideon smile and get up. Nell was sound asleep by the time he finished. He lightly trod over to her and kissed her ear before settling into bed, pulling her into his arms and falling asleep.
The next day, the geological land surveyor that Gideon invited arrived bright and early.
He did not allow Nell to run around with him today and instead told her to stay in the hotel and have fun with Cathy while he and Mr. Donnelly went to the mines.
Jean did not want to go, but Gideon forced her since she needed to gain some experience.
Although Jean was extremely unwilling, to quote Gideon, ‘If she wants to learn how to do business, she must start from scratch. Not knowing the intricacies is fine, but she must come along and at least get to know the basics.’
Nell knew he was doing this for her.
With Gideon’s status, a business opportunity like this did not need him to be personally present.
Thus, she convinced Jean to follow him. “Aunt Jean, just go along with him. If this deal goes through and earns money, you can go back to the Old Madam with your head held high and tell her how you did it. Otherwise, Gideon will get the credit when she asks while you know nothing.”
Jean thought about it, and it made sense. It was a chance that was hard to come by, so how could she not keep an eye on it?
With that, she followed Gideon happily.
Nell accompanied Cathy in the hotel as they relaxed until Gideon and the rest returned in the afternoon. The mine was fine and they signed the contract.
Mr. Donnelly was all smiles since no matter who else wanted a shot at being business partners, none of them could match Gideon.
Apart from Mr. Donnelly, Jean was also exceptionally happy. Even though the mine was not dug out yet, she was already dreaming of the mountains of riches and gold.
Since the work was done, Gideon started discussing their trip home with Nell.
However, Mr. Donnelly noticed this and stopped them. “I know that you are busy people, President Leith and Mrs. Leith, but since you’re here, why don’t you relax for a while? It will make your trip worthwhile. Besides, it’s already getting dark, and rushing home now will just be exhausting. Why not rest for the night, have some fun, and then go home tomorrow morning?”
After the show, the group went out with the crowd as they left the hall, but someone bumped into Cathy as they were walking, and she yelped
Luckily, Sean had quick reflexes and grabbed onto her so that she did not fall.
“Are you ok?” he asked worriedly.
Cathy shook her head but Nell frowned.
“Mom, where is your purse?”
Cathy froze and realized what just happened. “Oh no! Someone snatched my purse!”
The moment the words left her lips, Sean rushed off to find the thief while Gideon guarded Nell and Cathy as they walked out to wait.
Cathy was very upset with herself. “Darn it, my mind hasn’t been working like it used to. I didn’t even notice my purse was missing.”
They were unsure if what happened previously had given her a huge shock and affected her memory or if it was something else entirely, but Cathy noticed that her reflexes were getting dull. It was clear that a thief had snuck her purse away while in the crowd, but she did not notice it.
Nell held her hand and comforted her, “Don't worry. Was there anything important in there?”
“Not really. Just some money and my phone.”
“Then, that’s alright. The money is fine, and we can just get you a new phone.”
