Chapter 19

Asher’s POV

I stared worriedly at her pale face and then at the pack’s healer. “She’s not responding to any of the treatments,” the pack healer explained, worry laced in his expression. “I doubt it’s poison. It’s better we take her to the hospital for a full check.”

Poison, that was our first guess and that was what he had been trying to confirm. I thought that maybe she had been bitten by a poisonous insect, but with the response I got from the pack healer, I didn’t know what else to think.

I lifted her like a child, hurriedly fitting her into the backseat of the car, urging the driver to drive at his highest speed. Soon we were at the hospital, received by a group of nurses.

Gemini was placed on a stretcher and rushed to the emergency room. I was asked to wait outside where I was almost dying of guilt.

This was one of the reasons I rejected my actual mates while searching for a chosen mate, I never wanted to be too attached to a person, to the point where I can’t control my emotions. But then the goddess always had her way of outsmarting us all.

My phone buzzed in my pocket but I ignored it, knowing I wasn’t in the right state of mind to speak to anyone. To avoid any other calls, I switched off my phone.

sat worried in the waiting area after having paced back and forth for about thirty minutes. The weight of my actions weighed down on me and I couldn’t bring myself to think what would happen if I lost Gemini.

Forget about the prophecy–Gemini was my mate. Losing a mate was one of the most painful things one could ever come to terms with.

A cold hand grasped my shoulder, causing me to look up- Alan.

“Your majesty,” He called in a soft tone.

I knew that if he wasn’t my subordinate, he would have rubbed it in my face. If only I had listened to him then, Gemini might not have suffered as much as she did.

I sighed in misery, “This mate stuff is the worst feeling ever,I admitted. “I can’t even get myself to calm down.

His eyes mirrored pity, the one thing I hated the most- being pitied. Alan didn’t bother saying another word, but I could tell that he was shocked at my reaction. I had always played cold, but here I am, being humbled by the mate bond.

The emergency door creaked open, revealing a bald man in white. “Doctor!” I called eager to hear the news he had brought. The doctor’s expression was neutral so I couldn’t read the meaning to it.

*Your majesty,” he called in a not–toourgent tone.

It seemed like he was trying to stay as calm as he could so as to not get me even more worried than I already was. But instead of keeping calm, my worry heightened.

“How is she?I asked eagerly.

“The young miss is fighting to be better,he started, looking around before concluding. “We should probably discuss this in my office.

I nodded, following him closely behind.

Once inside the office, he shot the door and led me to the seat.

Alan stood by the door while I sat opposite the doctor. I couldn’t even bring myself to relax into the chair, my curiosity tugging at me.

Gemini has just suffered from severe starvation,” He started, causing my eyes to widen.

“Starvation?” I repeated, looking back at Alan as if to confirm if he had heard the same thing.

“Yes, your majesty, the doctor confirmed.

How is that even possible?

I remembered instructing the maids to bring her breakfast, launch and dinner every single day, so how come she starved?

Could she have refused the food? Or did they never give them to her?

“She could have been able to endure it, but after running a thorough test, we realised that she must have had Ulcer, prior to this incident. We’re not

I ran my hands through my hair, letting out a heavy sigh. A feeling of dread settled at the pit of my stomach, the news left me weak and I collapsed into the chair in disbelief.
