Without a second thought, Kevin nodded, "Why are you suddenly asking about this? Did I do something wrong? Are you unhappy with me?"
He immediately stood up with a serious expression and ordered the nurse behind him:
"Bring all the women who've been in contact with me recently!"
Before long, more than a dozen women entered my room, including several nurses and a few maids. Wendy was among them.
She rubbed her belly, looking at me with eyes full of triumph.
Kevin stood with his hands behind his back, giving a stern command:
"Tell my wife how you've all been in contact with me recently, and the more detailed, the better!"
"Ma'am, the last time I saw Mr. Jackson was when I handed him your most recent meal plan."
"Ma'am, Mr. Jackson asked me to deliver the calming incense from home to the hospital, and that was when I saw him."
"Ma'am, Mr. Jackson asked me to come change your IV bag because it was about to run out."
One by one, they reported, each of their stories connected to me in some way, and I could sense their envy of me.
When it was Wendy's turn, she casually said:
"After delivering the fruit basket yesterday, I didn't have any further contact with Mr. Jackson. Don't worry, ma'am, Mr. Jackson only has you in his heart."
Although it sounded like a compliment, I could hear the heavy sarcasm behind her words.
I gave a self-deprecating smile and gestured for them to leave.
After proving his innocence, Kevin seemed much more at ease. He sat beside the bed and took my hand, speaking earnestly:
"Caroline, you know I've only loved you in this life. I'll never have feelings for any other woman but you."
I responded with a faint "mm," ignoring the disappointment in Kevin's eyes as I withdrew my hand.
Then, as if remembering something, Kevin added:
"Caroline, I'll be leaving tomorrow for a business trip and won't be able to stay with you. But my phone will be on 24/7, so if you miss me, just call."
He expressed himself with such sincerity, I couldn't see even the slightest hint of insincerity.
I suppressed the discomfort in my heart, nodding in acknowledgment: "Be safe on the road."
I clearly noticed the fleeting flash of guilt in his eyes, followed by a slightly aggrieved tone.
"But I'll miss you so much. Even though it's just for one day, I can't bear to be apart from you for even a second."
However, that sense of unease never left him. As time passed, it only grew stronger, and his mind began to drift far away. He didn't even hear the officiant ask him if he took Wendy as his wife.
It wasn't until Wendy shook his hand that he snapped back to reality. He looked into Wendy's eyes full of love, but in his mind, he saw the image of me, disappointed, staring at him.
He was startled and immediately pulled his hand away from Wendy's, turning and running out of the church.
"Mr. Jackson, the wedding isn't over yet! Where are you going?"
It was only then that he realized how important I was to him. How could he marry another woman behind my back?
‘Caroline, you have to wait for me.’
Kevin hurried back to the hospital, rushing to my room. When he saw me still lying in bed, covered by the blanket, he finally felt a little relieved.
He pushed open the door and walked in, wearing a gentle smile.
"Darling, I'm back!"
The person on the bed didn't react, so Kevin carefully lifted the blanket. His smile froze when he saw that it wasn't me under the blanket, but a pillow instead.
"Caroline, where are you!?"
