Seven Years a Shadow: The Stand-In's Escape novel Chapter 90

My heart felt as if it had been violently torn in two, the pain piercing deep within.

The man who once vowed to love only me, to cherish me forever, was now sneaking around with another woman behind my back.

It was as if an invisible hand had slapped me across the face, and the intense feeling of humiliation almost consumed me.

My legs gave out, and I collapsed to the ground in a pathetic and comical heap.

A passing nurse hurried over to help me, seeing the tears on my face and mistaking them for the result of a fall. She quickly comforted me:

"Ma'am, please don't cry. Mr. Jackson would be heartbroken if he saw you like this."

Seeing the nurses' concerned expressions, I could no longer hold back my emotions and began to sob uncontrollably.

After I had cried myself out, I returned to my room and fell asleep.

When I woke up, Kevin still hadn't returned, but I saw Wendy standing at the foot of my bed, her face dark.

She looked at me with disdain, sneering as she spoke:

"You saw everything that happened, didn't you? Kevin loves me. I'm carrying his child."

I clenched my fists, trembling as I asked her, "How long have you two been together?"

Wendy extended three fingers with a smug look on her face and said proudly:

"Three years. Three years ago, he met me at a dinner, and fell in love with me at first sight. On the very first night, he had me in his bed. He felt guilty afterward, so he transferred all his assets to you, but those things were meant for me and the child. You took what belonged to us."

I bit my lip so hard that it almost bled, forcing myself to suppress the urge to strike her.

Seeing my reaction, Wendy became even bolder, adding:

"Did you think he really loved you? Actually, every night after you fall asleep, he comes to find me. Even now that I'm pregnant, he won't stop. I won't hide it from you—on the day of your miscarriage, he didn't attend any social events. Instead, he spent the night in my bed. He's already addicted to me. If you're smart, you'll just divorce him."

Hearing this, memories of the miscarriage flooded my mind. The pain had been so intense that I passed out several times, nearly dying from blood loss.

"Caroline, you're finally awake. You scared me so much just now."

The scene from the utility room flashed through my mind, and I felt an overwhelming wave of disgust. I pushed Kevin away.

"I'm fine."

Kevin was stunned by the push. A trace of disappointment flashed in his eyes.

I looked into his tear-filled eyes and asked the question that had been weighing heavily on my heart these past few days:

"Do you remember what I told you before we got married?"

Before our wedding, I had told him that if he fell in love with someone else, he needed to tell me, and I would step aside for the other person.

But if he lied to me, I would disappear from his world forever.
