Seven Years a Shadow: The Stand-In's Escape novel Chapter 68

"Assistant Roy, please don't mind."

The cake in my hands suddenly felt as if it weighed a thousand pounds.

I was about to give it back, but I saw the surprise in my son's eyes.

My heart softened, and I paused.

My son didn't understand the adult conflict and looked at Emerson with eager expectation.

"Can you eat it with me?"

Emerson hesitated for a moment but agreed.

My son cheered and ran into the living room, urging me to open the cake.

I patted his head, quickly cutting the cake.

But the smile on my face froze the moment the cake touched my son's mouth.

"Spit it out! You can't eat this!"

I nearly panicked as I snatched the cake from my son's hand, my expression frantic.

Emerson's face immediately darkened.

"Hailee, are you out of your mind?"

I looked up, my eyes reddening.

"Lucas is allergic to mangoes. Didn't you know?"

The moment the words left my mouth, panic swiftly crossed Emerson's face.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know."

Sorry again.

From the moment my son was born, I had heard "sorry" countless times.

My son finally realized and looked at Emerson, his eyes no longer filled with expectation.

"It's okay, they didn't know, it's normal."

After saying that, my son buried his face in my arms, refusing to look at Emerson again.

Without hesitation, I picked up my son and walked out.

Even as we exited the villa, I could still feel Emerson's apologetic and flustered gaze.

But this time, neither my son nor I would be moved.

After leaving home, I went straight to the company and quickly packed up my office.

I had originally wanted to say a proper goodbye, but now it seemed unnecessary.

I placed the signed divorce agreement on the desk and let out a long breath.

With my luggage in hand, I took my son to the airport.

Before getting on the plane, I asked my son.

"Are you angry that I'm taking you away?"

My son shook his head, pressing his face against mine.

"I just want mom."

Tears finally flowed, and all the pain turned into relief at that moment.

I pulled out my phone and blocked all of Emerson's contacts.

Emerson, we will never meet again.

The next day, Emerson arrived at the company on time.

Since yesterday, he had been feeling uneasy.

Opening his email, an approved email popped up.

"Resignation application?"

Looking at the large words on the email, Emerson suddenly had a bad premonition.

Just as he was about to open it, Jenny walked in gracefully.

"Mr. Martin, here's the report from last time."

Jenny placed the document on the desk and walked up to Emerson, casually resting her hand on his shoulder.

In the past, this was their tacit understanding of flirting.

But now, Emerson felt a sudden discomfort.

Sitting up straight, Emerson flipped through the document and frowned after just one page.

Apart from the formatting, nearly everything was wrong.

Even the department name was incorrect.

Looking at the flawed report, many images suddenly flashed in his mind.

Seven years ago, I was a rookie, with no work experience and no extraordinary academic background.

I didn't stand out among the many excellent job seekers.

But I was the only one who passed the probation period.

Back then, I had drive and was willing to work hard.

When I didn't know how to make reports, I shamelessly begged senior colleagues for guidance.

When I didn't understand the work process, I carried a notebook with me at all times to take notes.

No matter when, if he needed me, I would always appear and provide the best solution in the shortest time.

Even at business gatherings, I could quickly remember each person's identity and characteristics.

Back then, what I said most often was.

"Mr. Martin, next time I'll do better."

If secretarial work were graded,

I would undoubtedly have received a perfect score.

Emerson still remembered that, back then, as long as he was with Hailee, everyone envied him for having a gold-medal secretary.

Unfortunately, everything was ruined that night.

After that chaotic incident, everything changed.

Emerson still didn't understand why I would degrade myself and go through all the trouble to climb into his bed.

What he knew was that when he woke up that morning and found Hailee lying beside him,

all his admiration turned into hatred.

The more he had admired her before, the more he despised her after.

So even when they had to marry because of the child, he still couldn't get along with Hailee.

He even deliberately sought someone completely opposite, Jenny, as a rebellion against his marriage.

But now...

Thinking about Jenny, who was becoming more outrageous, Emerson suddenly found it boring.
