Seven Years a Shadow: The Stand-In's Escape novel Chapter 62

My son also frowned, looking at me with disdain.

“Good thing you're not my real mom, or I’d really be ashamed!”

Daniel even rolled his eyes, saying helplessly.

“Jennifer, marrying you was the biggest disgrace of my life!”

“Don’t ever say you know me again. I can't carry this shame.”

After that, he grabbed Olivia’s arm and walked away with my son from the press conference, leaving me to face the cameras alone.

And just like that, I made it to the trending headlines.

The reporters had been livestreaming the entire event.

People across the country were discussing my experience and actions.

“Was this woman blind in her past life? How could she adore such a trashy man?”

“She was trampled on and humiliated, yet still blesses that family of ingrates? It’s maddening!”

“I can’t believe there’s such a spineless, foolish woman in the world.”

“Seriously, does this topic even deserve to trend?”

The internet exploded. Everyone was either furious at my situation or sympathetic towards me.

Some well-meaning people even reached out to offer help, suggesting I exploit the situation for publicity, live-stream my misfortune, and earn some money to recover my losses.

I declined all offers and quietly returned home.

When I arrived, I saw Olivia moving her things into my house.

Meanwhile, Daniel and my son were throwing my belongings out as if they were trash.

When they saw me, Daniel lifted his chin, looking at me with disgust.

“Jennifer, this house now belongs to Charlie. We’re divorced, so you can hurry up and take your junk and leave!”

“Don’t interfere with our family reunion!”

Daniel no longer bothered to pretend.

The gentleness and thoughtfulness he once showed me were gone.

All that remained was endless disdain and hatred.

It was as if he had been tolerating me for a long time.

My son looked down on me the same way.

“To live your life like this... you really are a failure.”

With that, he took out two hundred dollars from his wallet and threw it on the ground.

“This is this month's living allowance. Take the money and get lost. Don’t dirty my house!”

My son, who once respected me deeply, now despised me to the core.

I didn’t say anything.

I silently picked up the money and my luggage.

Then I turned and left.

After leaving the mansion, I moved into an old, dilapidated apartment and started living a poor, solitary life.

Every day, my meals consisted of plain congee with pickled vegetables or steamed buns with hot water.

“Otherwise, we’ll get blasted by those people online!”

“They’re a bunch of idiots, even though it’s none of their business, they have to follow me around and curse me like I blew up their family graves!”

My son, however, didn’t care at all.

“Dad, don’t be angry. I’m about to marry Isla Green.”

“Once I bring her family’s wealth over, who cares about those noisy pests on the internet?”

“From now on, you and mom can just enjoy life!”

Upon hearing this, Daniel finally relaxed.

“That’s true, Isla is a real powerhouse, she rose through her own abilities and her influence and assets are reportedly greater than our Carter Group!”

“You’re amazing, son, even better than me, to land such an incredible woman!”

After I transferred my assets to my son, the very next day, they renamed White Group to Carter Group.

My son’s name was also changed from Charlie White to Charlie Carter.

Under their management, the company began to decline, its market value dropped significantly.

But they weren’t worried, because Charlie had recently started dating a girl named Isla.

She was like a crazy black horse, storming the business world with her tremendous skills and decisive actions, quickly gaining a solid footing.

She even shot to the top and became a business legend.

This made their family even more arrogant.

Otherwise, they wouldn’t have specifically come to mock me.
