Seven months pregnant, I accidentally overheard my husband, talking to a poor student I had sponsored.
“Daniel Carter, if your wife finds out that the embryo implanted in her was ours, she’d probably be so mad she’d kill herself, right?”
“If she kills herself, then all her assets will be mine. What I’m afraid of is if she divorces me and kicks me out. So we have to keep this a secret. Once our child inherits her assets, we’ll give her a shock of a lifetime.”
I pretended I didn’t hear anything.
“Darling, weren't you supposed to go to the company for a board meeting today? How come you're still busy in the study?”
Daniel brought a cup of hot milk and placed it in front of me, gently asking, as always.
I closed my computer and smiled as I looked up.
“Charlie's teacher said he's been coughing a little lately, so I contacted the most authoritative pediatric specialist and will take him to the hospital tomorrow.”
Daniel patted my head, moved.
“Every time Charlie has even the slightest headache or cold, you care so much.”
“When he grows up, he'll definitely be very filial to you.”
I looked at Daniel and naturally replied. “I'm Charlie's mother, who else should I care for if not him?”
Daniel was moved and smiled warmly.
“You're so good, wife. To be able to marry you, to have children with you, is the greatest blessing of my life.”
Looking at Daniel's loving eyes, I smiled faintly, not responding.
I had been in a relationship with Daniel for three years and married him for seven years.
In those ten years,
He always took care of me when I was sick or tired.
He would surprise me at the most unexpected moments.
When he was emotional, he would tightly hold me in his arms, saying he would love me forever.
If it weren't for that day when I accidentally overheard his words,
I wouldn't have believed that the man who always loved me so dearly would betray me.
“Auntie Olivia Thompson, you’re finally here!”
Suddenly, I heard my son's delighted voice from the living room.
I immediately stood up and walked out of the study.
I saw Olivia walking in through the door, expertly picking up my son and affectionately kissing his cheek.
“Little Charlie, did you miss me?”
After that, Olivia’s gaze suddenly landed on me.
Her smile froze, and her face briefly became unnatural.
Before she could speak, Daniel quickly stepped forward to explain for her.
“Wife, today there’s an outdoor parent-child activity at Charlie’s kindergarten. I thought you were busy with work, so I didn’t mention it. I specifically asked Olivia to come help out.”
Olivia quickly put down my son and nervously explained to me.
“Yes, yes, yes, Jennifer, you’ve sponsored me for so many years. I’m always grateful to you and wanted to repay you well.”
“As soon as I received Daniel's call, I rushed over immediately.”
Looking at her nervous and guilty expression,
“I want Mommy to go to the company, and Auntie Olivia can come with Dad and me to the kindergarten!”
It seemed that Daniel was afraid his son would say something inappropriate, so he immediately pulled him into his arms and explained to me.
“Wife, Charlie is just worried about delaying your work. Last time he even said that Mommy works hard, so I should avoid bothering you!”
Olivia also nodded in agreement.
“Charlie is such a thoughtful child.”
“It’s only someone as outstanding as you, Jennifer, who could have such a well-behaved son like Charlie.”
I smiled and said to my son.
“Then let’s do whatever Charlie wants.”
Upon hearing that, my son happily jumped up and down.
He completely ignored my presence and directly grabbed Olivia and Daniel’s hands, running out the door.
Watching them as a happy family of three,
I smiled faintly.
Then, I turned and returned to my study to continue with my unfinished work.
It seems like Olivia had become increasingly bold, thinking I was easy to deceive and unaware of any strange behavior.
She had once secretly met with Daniel while I was at work, but now even when I’m at home, she finds various excuses to come over.
“Jennifer, I recently taught myself cooking and wanted to come over to make something delicious to thank you for your support all these years.”
“Jennifer, I just came back from the countryside and brought a lot of local specialties. I specifically came to give them to you.”
