Chapter 91
Emily stared directly into those eyes, searching, but saw nothing there, nothing but pure innocence. After a long silence, Emily replied, “I can barely support myself. How could I afford to keep someone idle?”
Austin blinked and replied firmly, “I’m not idle, Emily. I can handle all the housework: cooking, laundry, cleaning. I’m low-maintenance and hardworking, and I can even make money. Won’t you reconsider?”
Emily busied herself with the discarded dressings, keeping her tone cool. “Since you’re so capable, hurry up and get better. Don’t drag me down.” Her tone was icy, as if she couldn’t wait to sever all ties with Austin right then and there.
But before she left, she quietly slipped a few hundred dollars where he would find it. Austin looked at the slightly crumpled bills and suddenly let out a soft chuckle.
‘Emily has been so good to me. I’ve got to start earning money quickly. I can’t be a burden to her,’ Austin thought.
Although Bob had moved back to the Bennett family home, he went to the hospital every day to care for Charles, while Emily worked long hours, leaving early and coming home late. As a result, their interactions were minimal.
With Bob present, members of the Bennett family no longer openly displayed their dislike for Emily as they used to, which made her feel much more at ease.
Soon, it was time for James’ birthday party. With Bob’s help, Emily changed into a modest, understated dress that fully covered her arms and legs. Armed with the invitation from Xavier, she made her way to the party.
Entry to elite gatherings like that was strictly invitation-only, and no one got in without having their invitation checked. As Emily waited at the entrance for security to check her invitation, Yvonne, inside, happened to spot the
scene.
“Mr. Jenkins, your woman for today has arrived.” Yvonne excitedly patted Xavier on the arm. “You’ve got to seize the moment; everyone’s waiting to see how this plays out.”
Xavier arched a confident eyebrow. “Don’t worry. I’ve been playing this game for so long. Today’s the big moment, and I won’t drop the ball.”
He exchanged a knowing glance with Yvonne, then plastered on a delighted expression and hurried over to Emily. “Emily, you’re finally here. I’ve been waiting for you forever.
“Sure, it’s my dad’s birthday today, but honestly, you’re the real star of the night. You know what I mean, don’t you?”
He openly fixed Emily with a tender, suggestive gaze, his words dripping with innuendo.
Emily dipped her head slightly, appearing coy to onlookers. But the moment she lowered her head, her eyes darted in the direction from which Xavier had just come.
“I know,” Emily said, her voice flat. “I want to meet your parents first.”
Xavier’s brow furrowed briefly before he quickly recomposed himself. He said, “First, let’s go somewhere. If you agree, then, of course, I’ll introduce you to my parents.”
