Chapter 71
Once Emily was sure he was unconscious and wouldn’t suddenly make a sound, she looked away and quietly made her way
toward the door.
The warehouse door was one of those metal ones. Though locked, the edges didn’t seal tightly.
Emily crouched in a corner, peeking out cautiously. She saw Kyle and his partner holding flashlights, scanning the road and surroundings while chatting. “The Bennett family is cruel. After raising her for eighteen years, they just tossed her aside.
Kyle chuckled. “Rich people are all cruel. As long as we play our part, let her go, and send that man to St. Gabriel Reform Academy, we’ll earn more than any of our past jobs.”
The mention of St. Gabriel Reform Academy made Emily freeze. A chill raced through her, and she thought, ‘Are they talking about this man? Are they sending him to St. Gabriel Reform Academy?’
The man gave Kyle a nudge. “You know the rules. No talk about missions or identities during the job. Just keep your mouth shut.”
Kyle laughed it off. “Relax. No one is listening. The man is unconscious while the woman is tied up. What’s there to worry about?”
The man didn’t argue. He just glanced back at the locked door out of habit. Emily tensed up, instinctively pulling herself tighter into the shadows, feeling nervous.
As footsteps drew nearer, Emily held her breath.
If he aimed the flashlight through the crack in the door, he would see Emily curled up in the corner. Fortunately, he only checked the chain to make sure it was secure, then moved on.
Kyle let out a laugh. “You’re being way too cautious. There’s no exit inside. They won’t escape. Let’s split up and take a round. We can cover for the boss when he’s back.”
They didn’t come back in. They just went off in different directions to patrol. Emily finally relaxed a bit. She got up as quietly as she could and crept back into the warehouse.
The front door was locked, and someone was keeping watch outside. There was no getting through, and she had to figure something else out.
Emily’s eyes landed on the square window, nearly 6 feet high, its glass long since shattered. Aside from the front door, it was the only possible exit.
Beneath it stood a tall metal rack, surrounded by piles of random junk scattered across the abandoned warehouse.
Emily quietly gathered a few objects she could stack, creating a makeshift step to help her climb the rack. She moved with extreme care, making sure not to make a single sound.
After setting everything up, Emily took off one shoe and placed it on the rack, but didn’t climb up. As she turned, she locked eyes with Austin.
The sudden eye contact nearly made Emily scream, but she held it in. Austin, who had been unconscious until now, had somehow woken up, and he was staring at her blankly.
He looked young and tough, with earnest eyes. And yet, Emily couldn’t shake the sense of tension and danger radiating from
