Chapter 146

‘Damn that old fool Bob actually managed to track down Cale, and now he claims he’s found something?’ Lydia thought, her anger simmering. Her gaze grew deeper, a murderous intent flickering in her eyes.

She suddenly spun on her heel and strode toward her room, her voice cold and commanding. “Arrange a perfect accident for me. That old bastard must never come back alive.”

She wasn’t on the phone, and no one else was visibly present, yet her words sounded as if she were giving orders to some unseen force.

An eerie silence hung over the empty corridor.

Now wary, Emily kept her guard up around Lydia, doing her best to avoid any contact.

Fortunately, Lydia didn’t try to approach her either; in fact, after noticing Emily’s evasiveness, Lydia began keeping her distance as well.

This should have been good news for Emily, yet a nagging sense of unease clung to her. It was the kind of unease that whispered of something ominous on the horizon.

Haunted by this unease, Emily kept zoning out while talking to Louisa.

“Emily, is something bothering you?” Noticing how distracted Emily looked, Louisa asked with concern. She gently took Emily’s hand. “If you’re facing any difficulties, feel free to tell me. As your teacher, I’ll do everything I can to help.”

Emily snapped out of her daze and was about to say she was fine when Tina, who had been standing nearby, cut in sharply, “You’ve retired early, Mom. You’re no longer a teacher. What could you possibly do for her?

“Just enjoy your retirement at home. Why do you have to meddle in other people’s business?”

If it weren’t for Emily clearing her mother’s name, Tina wouldn’t have even let Emily step foot through that door.

Emily knew Tina was still upset with her. After all, Emily was the one who had dragged Louisa into this mess. She could understand Tina’s anger.

Emily squeezed Louisa’s hand back. “I appreciate your concern, Louisa, but I’m really fine. I was just lost in thought, wondering if your resignation had anything to do with

me.”

The principal had already issued an official notice clearing Louisa’s name and even promised her additional compensation and other benefits. There was truly no need for Louisa to resign.

Knowing Emily would blame herself, Louisa quickly reassured her. “Please don’t overthink it. My resignation wasn’t because of you; it was my choice.”

She sighed, “A school should be a sanctuary for nurturing talent, not a breeding ground for power and money. I became a teacher out of my love for art, but that school no longer aligns with my values.”

Emily could sense that Louisa was being sincere. Losing a teacher as outstanding as Louisa was truly the school’s loss.

Emily didn’t dwell on the subject. Instead, she pulled out her latest paintings and asked Louisa for some feedback.

For a moment, it felt as if they’d been transported back two years before everything

went wrong.
