Chapter 112
Emily lowered her gaze, veiling the turbulent emotions swirling in her eyes.
‘I had thought that after leaving St. Gabriel Reform Academy, nothing would matter to me anymore, Emily thought.
But at that moment, a sudden wave of fear welled up in Emily’s heart. She was terrified that Lydia was truly an inescapable curse, that everything she held dear would be snatched away from her.
Emily hung her head low, her entire face radiating gloom. Lydia held her head high, a triumphant smile on her lips.
Amidst the tense atmosphere, Austin finally spoke up, his tone dripping with sarcasm, “Stop acting like a child. Your makeup is so caked on it’s practically flaking off. Who knows how ancient you really look without it?”
Lydia’s face froze, her smile stiffening in place. Emily also jerked her head up, a look of confusion flickering across her face as she looked at Austin. Clearly, no one had expected him to say that.
“You…” Lydia spat through gritted teeth, her eyes burning with such fury. It seemed she wanted to tear Austin apart right then and there.
Lydia thought, ‘My tried-and-true tricks have always worked, and even the Bennetts who lived with Emily for eighteen years couldn’t resist. So why are they falling flat on this guy?’
Austin scoffed, “What? I don’t even know you. Who told you to act all buddy-buddy with me the moment you showed up?” He rolled his eyes so hard it was almost comical, his entire demeanor oozing disdain.
Austin linked arms with Emily and, with deadpan seriousness, said, “Emily, let’s get inside quick. Who knows if this is some human trafficker trying to scam us?”
Austin pulled Emily inside as he spoke, then slammed the door shut behind them. He slammed the door so hard, as if he wanted to smack it right in Lydia’s face.
Austin clapped his hands and cockily raised an eyebrow at Emily, looking for all the world like he was waiting for her praise.
Emily couldn’t help but laugh at the way he acted, though her eyes stung with emotion.
Given Austin’s personality, Emily thought to herself, ‘He must be fishing for compliments. Good thing I already know exactly what to say!’
But before she could speak, Austin cut in first, “Did you catch that move, Emily?”
Emily blinked, momentarily baffled. She wasn’t quite sure what he meant. Austin sighed and explained again, “Next time you run into someone you don’t want to see, just kick them out. Doesn’t matter who they are.”
Austin scoffed, “We only live once. Why the hell should you let yourself be pushed around by some irrelevant piece of trash?”
Emily froze, Austin’s words hammering at her heart like a series of tiny blows. Turns out, someone really did notice all the pain she’d been carrying.

After such an incident, anyone would naturally wonder about the history between that woman outside and Emily, and Austin was no exception.
But he could tell that Emily was deeply uncomfortable with the person outside, so even though he was burning with curiosity, he held his tongue. Austin simply said, “I need some help with lunch today, Emily. Care to lend a hand?”
Emily reined in the storm of emotions swirling in her eyes and nodded. With unspoken agreement, neither of them brought up what had just happened.
