Chapter 109
Austin put on a pained, theatrically long-suffering expression and lamented, “It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t shown up by Emily’s side, this ill-mannered jerk wouldn’t have misunderstood her or hurled such venomous insults at her.
“He’s truly outrageous. Unlike him, I’ll only ever dote on dear Emily.”
Emily was speechless. Watching Austin deliberately mimic Lydia’s dramatic manner, the knot of sourness that had been lingering in Emily’s chest suddenly melted away.
Lucas’s face turned purple with rage. “Shut your mouth. You shameless, good-for-nothing gigolo! Stop trying to sow discord here.”
Austin put on an innocent look and said, “I was just mimicking your precious Lydia’s way of talking. How does that count as stirring up trouble?
“What, did she trademark those lines or something? Is she the only one in the world allowed to say them?”
Lucas turned to look at Lydia, just in time to catch a glimpse of her slightly stiff expression and the faintly sullen look flickering across her face.
Lucas thought, ‘Lydia… How could she possibly wear such an expression?’ He blinked instinctively, momentarily thrown off.
But when he looked again, Lydia’s face had returned to that all-too-familiar expression of grievance and delicate vulnerability, the perfect picture of a damsel in distress, clearly hoping he would stand up for her. Lucas breathed a silent sigh of relief.
He thought to himself, ‘I knew it. There’s no way Lydia could ever be like that gigolo. She’s so pure-hearted, she even takes the blame for all of Emily’s mistakes herself.’
At that thought, Lucas whirled around to glare furiously at Austin. “You really think everyone is as vile as you? Lydia’s pure-hearted, and she’s nothing like a shameless gigolo like you, always scheming.”
Austin rolled his eyes dramatically at Lucas and sneered, “If I were as brainless as you, I’d have the decency to stay home instead of coming out here and embarrassing everyone.
“She didn’t even say a word and just put on an act of being wronged, and you’re already falling all over yourself to defend her. What is it?”
Lucas had been pampered his entire life and was never once insulted like this. He stood dumbfounded.
His young, handsome face cycled through a kaleidoscope of angry hues, putting even a painter’s palette to shame.
Without giving Lucas a chance to react, Austin grabbed Emily by the hand and swiftly led her away.
They hadn’t gone far when Austin deliberately raised his voice loud enough to be heard. “A rabid monster’s bite hurts the most. Let’s hurry. I don’t want Emily getting bitten.”
The last trace of gloom in Emily’s heart melted away at his words, and she even burst into delighted laughter.
Lucas snapped back to reality, fury blazing through him like wildfire. “Don’t you dare walk away!” Lucas yelled.

Lucas was about to charge after them in a rage, but Austin had already whisked Emily into a waiting taxi.
Lucas was so furious he could kill, but with no one to lash out at, he ended up giving his own luxury car a few furious kicks.
Lydia appeared startled by his outburst, tears streaming down her face in an exaggerated display. “Lucas, are you angry with me?
“It’s all my fault,” Lydia wailed, her voice trembling with dramatic sobs. “If you hadn’t stood up for me, you wouldn’t have had this misunderstanding with Emily. If I’d known things would turn out like this, I should’ve just endured it…”
Initially, Lucas did harbor some resentment, but the moment he heard Lydia’s next words, that resentment instantly morphed into regret.
