Chapter 216
My ears warmed slightly. It had been an impulse, a nickname I’d thought of the first time I’d heard her laugh.
“Yes,” I admitted. “Because your laugh sounds like tiny bells ringing. On my darkest days, it’s like sunshine pouring into the room.”
Het face broke into a smile, and she grabbed my finger with her small hand. “I like that?
Orion frowned, setting down his wooden box. He tried to mask his emotions, but I could see the jealousy in his eyes. Being a twin must be difficult sometimes–always sharing the spotlight.
“What’s wrong, Orion?” I asked.
He stared at his feet, scuffing the carpet with his toe. “Nothing.”
His tone said otherwise, Lyra leaned closer to me, whispering loud enough for Orion to hear, “He wants a special name too.”
I looked at my son thoughtfully. Despite his coldness toward me, I felt a rush of affection for him. “I think I know the perfect name for you, Orion.”
His head snapped up, eyes revealing his interest despite his attempt to appear indifferent. “What?”
I moved closer to him. “Little Warrior. Because even at your age, you’ve shown the courage to protect your sister and mother. There’s no quality more valuable than that.”
His eyes brightened, the corners of his mouth twitching upward. “Really?”
I nodded, gently ruffling his hair. “Yes. You have the heart of a werewolf warrior.”
The smile that spread across his face was the first genuine one I’d seen from him since they’d arrived. Something warm unfurled in my chest- I’d finally made a real connection with my children.
“But now you both need to eat,” I said, gesturing toward the trays. “Otherwise, I might have to take back those tablets.”
Lyra tugged on my hand. “Daddy, please don’t take the tablets. We miss Mommy.”
Her use of “Daddy” didn’t escape my notice. I studied their anxious faces.
“Do you know why I gave you those devices?” I asked.
They shook their heads. Lyra mumbled, “Because we kept asking to play games?”
I smiled slightly. “That’s part of it. But mainly, I know you miss your mother.”
My voice softened. “I gave them to you so you could stay connected with her.”
Orion looked up at me, disbelief written across his features. “Really? You… you won’t stop us?”
“Not as long as you eat your meals,” I promised.
The tension in the room suddenly broke as a ringing sound came from beneath Lyra’s pillow, Both children’s eyes went wide with panic.
Orion quickly pulled out the tablet, his finger poised to decline the call, but I reached for it first. “Don’t worry,” I assured them. I’m not going back on my promise,
I walked toward the balcony, telling them over my shoulder, “Don’t interrupt me.”
