Chapter 192
How are you here?” he asked quietly.
I work at this coffee shop,” I replied simply.
Eldreth sighed, his gaze unfocused as he looked at me. He looked exhausted, like he needed to rest.
“I’m a bit drunk,” he admitted. “Don’t mind me.”
‘It’s okay, Eldreth,” I assured him.
He dropped his head onto the table, looking completely drained. I watched him with curiosity, wondering what could have driven this respected healer to drink himself into such a state. And hadn’t he said he was looking for me?
“Were you really looking for me?” I asked gently. “Is there something I can help you with?”
My mind was racing. Unlike the cold, unfeeling Tristan, Eldreth had always given me a sense of warmth and hope. Even in his current inebriated state, his presence felt like a sign–a connection to the help my brother desperately needed.
When Eldreth didn’t answer, I assumed he’d fallen asleep. I leaned closer to check on him and noticed something on the back of his neck–a black mark partially visible above his collar.
I frowned, trying to get a better look. Carefully, I moved closer to examine it.
As I leaned in, 1 could see it was a black wolf paw print, intricate and detailed. I’d never seen a mark like this before, and I was so focused on studying it that I didn’t notice Eldreth moving his head.
Suddenly, he turned toward me, his face inches from mine. I gasped, startled by the proximity.
His slightly unfocused eyes met mine. “What are you looking at?” he asked.
“The… the mark on your neck,” I answered honestly.
“Only healers bear this mark,” he replied, his voice low and slightly raspy.
I slowly leaned back, remembering what Astrid had once told me–that I would become a healer someday. I hadn’t believed her then. The idea seemed absurd, especially since I’d never shown any healing abilities beyond basic first aid.
Eldreth was staring at me again, his gaze intense despite his inebriated state. It unnerved me a little, making me wonder if he was somehow possessed. There was something in his eyes I couldn’t quite read–something that made me uncomfortable in a way that was completely different from Tristan’s cold glare earlier today.
I cleared my throat and stood up. “I think I can make you some coffee. It might help with the headache you’re probably going to have.”
I turned to walk toward the counter, but Eldreth caught my wrist.
With his head back on the table, he mumbled, “If you want to help me, help me get to my car. I want to go back to my hotel.”
I hesitated, remembering how he had once helped me when I was drunk, treating me with respect and care. Now it was my turn to return the favor. Besides, I couldn’t lose contact with him–he might be my brother’s only hope.
“Alright, I agreed. “Let’s go.”
Getting Eldreth to his feet was a challenge, but he wasn’t completely incapacitated. He managed to stand, leaning against me as I put his arm around my shoulders. Though he was drunk, he wasn’t deadweight, which I was grateful for given our size difference.

Where’s your cars Lasked,
I don’t know, he mumbled, swaying slightly,
I stared at him in dismay. Great. Now what?
I started walking left, hoping to spot his vehicle, but Eldreth was becoming heavier against me with each step.
“Don’t pass out on me,” I warned him. “Or we’ll be stuck on the street all night.”
He giggled in response, a sound so unexpected from the dignified healer that it was almost bizarre.
I sighed, deciding to call a taxi. But as I tried to shift Eldreth’s weight to get to my phone, he slumped against me, nearly toppling as both. I managed to steady us, but just barely.
How am i supposed to call a cab like this? I thought, glancing around the empty street. There wasn’t a taxi in sight,
A feeling of helplessness washed over me. I looked up at Eldreth, my head resting against his chest due to our awkward position. My cheeks flushed at the intimacy of it. This was the man who had once been my mentor, someone I’d dreamed of meeting again–though certainly not under these circumstances. Still, it felt like fate had arranged this encounter.
Unlike this morning with Tristan, when I’d felt nothing but anger and powerlessness, now I felt a strange sense of calm and purpose.
“Eldreth, can you hear me?” I asked.
“Hmm?” he responded vaguely.
“I need your help,” I said quickly, seizing the opportunity. “Do you remember meting you? My brother is sick. Can you help him?”
Eldreth remained silent, as if he hadn’t heard me.
Suddenly, a car pulled up beside us, its headlights illuminating us in harsh white light. Someone got out and walked toward us.
I squinted against the glare, unable to make out who it was until I heard his voice.
“Lysandra!”
My heart sank as I recognized Tristan’s angry tone. Twice in one day? It felt like the universe was playing a cruel joke. What was he doing here?
Tristan strode toward us, his face a mask of fury.
