Heaton lowered his head and pressed a kiss on her lips. Then, he said in his hoarse voice, “It’s alright. I like you even if you have nothing to do.”
A normal woman would be very happy to hear their husbands say that, but Verian was a pregnant woman, so she became very annoyed.
She stared at him with her dewy eyes and said, “Wait until I become an ugly old woman with an out of shape body and checking up on you all the time because I have nothing to do. Will you still be patient with me by then?”
In fact, what she really wanted to ask was whether he would still like her when that day arrives.
However, coming to think of it, they would be an old married couple by then. She would appear too over-sentimental if she asked him whether he would still like her. Therefore, asking him whether he would be patient with her was more than enough.
“I will become an old man by then.”
Heaton’s way of comforting people was very unique. He would not sweet talk her by telling her words she would like to hear but instead would make her feel secure by showing her that he too had imperfections as well. For example, by telling her that he too would age together with her.
Verian stretched out her hand and stroked his face. “I’m so worried that this face of yours will never age. I’m screwed if you look this handsome forever.”
“If that’s the case, then it must be your blessing.”
Madam Leah knocked on the door as they were talking.
“Mrs. Fudd, do you want to have supper now?”
“I’ll eat it later.”
It was snack time for the pregnant woman. Recently, Verian had been eating five to six meals a day. Even though she only had small portions for each meal, she still gained weight.
Verian mumbled, “Heaton, I’ve been gaining quite a lot of weight recently…”
Heaton pinched her cheeks, “You’re right. I’ll accompany you to exercise after your confinement period.”
Verian fretted about the thought of having to run with Heaton a few months later and she would rather stay fat.
After scrolling through her phone for a while, Verian felt thirsty and was about to get up from the bed. “I’m going to pour myself a cup of water.”
Heaton pressed her down and said instead, “I’ll go.”
“But you can’t see…”
“I’m familiar with our house.”
Heaton got up and walked out of the bedroom before she could say anything else.
…
It was in the kitchen downstairs.
Madam Leah had already gone to bed and Verian’s supper was in the microwave. Nancy had the medicine in Nancy’s palm. She took a few deep breaths before mixing the powder into the food.
Heaton saw Nancy mixing something into the food as he arrived in the kitchen and he frowned.
Panicking, Nancy ran out of the kitchen, nearly bumping into Heaton who was about to walk in.
“Hea… Heaton?”
She looked at him subconsciously. Frightened, her face turned white.
“Sister-in-law, you’re still awake at this hour?”
Nancy heaved a silent sigh. Right, Heaton was blind and she did not need to be nervous. Heaton would not see anything even if he was standing right next to her.
She pretended to be calm and said, “Yes. I felt a bit thirsty so I came down to get some water.”
“Oh, what a coincidence. Verian felt thirsty too so I came down to get her some water. I’m also going to bring her the supper that Madam Leah prepared.”
Nancy’s eyes twitched as she heard the word supper. She went absent-minded for a few moments.
“Really? You can’t see and she’s ordering you around like that? I’ll pour you a cup of water just in case you burn yourself.”
Heaton did not refuse and said, “Alright. I’m sorry to trouble you, sister-in-law.”
“Come on, it’s no trouble at all. We’re a family, don’t need to be so courteous.”
After handing the cup of water to Heaton, Nancy continued saying, “By the way, the supper is in the microwave. I’ll take it out for you.”
“Alright.”
Nancy took out the food and handed it over to Heaton. She even asked in a concerned tone, “Shall I bring them up for you?”
“That would be great. Just in case I trip and spill the food.”
Nancy smiled mockingly. She realised that was how much Heaton cared about Verian. He was blind, but instead of worrying if he would fall, he was worried that he might spill that woman’s supper.
She finally gave up and realised that proved why she should fight for Zaynie and her place in that family!
They walked upstairs and as they reached the bedroom door, Heaton said politely, “Sister-in-law, you can go back to your room now. I can handle this by myself.”
“Alright, goodnight. Be careful not to spill the food.”
“Mrs. Fudd, I can see you clearly.”
“That’s so great!”
Verian threw herself into his arms and hugged his neck tightly with both arms. She sobbed, “That’s amazing! You finally got your sight back! I was so worried that you will be blind all your life!”
Heaton hugged her and raised his eyebrows. “I thought you said that you’re happy because I can’t see?”
“I said that to comfort you because I was worried you’ll be sad. Who would want you to be blind? Although you won’t be able to look at other women, you can’t see me too if you’re blind… I want you to be able to look at me.”
Verian was so excited that tears started falling down her cheeks. They were tears of joy.
Heaton pressed his index finger to her lips, asking her to keep quiet, “Shhh.”
Confused, Verian stared at him. “What’s wrong?”
“Lie down and sleep. Don’t tell anybody about me regaining my sight.”
“Why? Dad and Little Jelly Bean don't know about this yet. They would be thrilled if they find out that you can see now.”
Heaton hugged her and laid down on the bed with her. “I still have some things left to do.”
Verian did not know what he was talking about, but he must have his own reasons for saying that so she said, “Alright, I won’t tell them for now.”
“Erm… I haven’t had my supper yet. Let me go.”
Heaton looked at her with an amused expression and said, “Why are you so obsessed with your supper, huh?”
Looking at the disdain look on his face, she pouted her lips and said, “Pregnant women are big eaters. Why do you look like you're disgusted? Will your son develop healthily if I don’t eat well?”
“How do you know it’s a son?”
“Little Jelly Bean is a girl. If we give birth to a son now, it will be perfect. One son and one daughter, what a perfect family!”
Heaton said, “But I still prefer having a daughter.”
“Are you a fool for your daughter?”
Verian wanted to reach out for the supper again as she was talking but Heaton immediately pulled her back. “Late-night snacking is not good for your health. Stop eating and let’s go to bed.”
Verian was speechless.
Was she doing any harm to him for eating in the middle of the night?
