Verian was startled awake as she slept.
She was drenched in sweat when she woke up.
She dreamed about Heaton struggling under the seafloor and constantly calling out to her. She wanted to save him but felt like her body was being held in place by a spell, unable to move even an inch.
Little Jelly Bean was sleeping soundly beside her.
Verian stared at Little Jelly Bean’s adorable face. She covered her face and took a deep breath. She felt extremely helpless.
If Heaton was actually… How would she tell Little Jelly Bean about it?
She could not do something this cruel. She could not bring herself to say it.
The moonlight from outside made everything feel cold and depressing.
Verian got up and took one of Heaton’s coats, draping it over her shoulder while she stood by the window and stared out at the moonlight.
It was as if the coat still had Heaton’s warmth and scent lingering on it. She grabbed onto it and gave it a huge sniff as her tears finally rolled out of her eyes.
“Heaton… You have to be safe…”
She looked up into the moon, clasped her hands, and prayed.
…
Not long after Old Lewis sent Little Jelly Bean to school the next morning, the cops called.
Verian just sat the table as she had no appetite to eat anything. After a few bites of porridge, she could no longer stomach any more.
After Old Master Fudd picked up the call, his expression turned serious.
Verian stood up and frantically asked, ‘Father, have they found Heaton yet?”
Old Master Fudd glanced Verian before remaining silent for a brief moment.
Verian frowned as she was so anxious, her tears were threatening to fall. She said, “Hurry up and tell me, father.”
“Heaton… Well, he hasn’t been found yet. They only found the car he was in.”
Verian stumbled backward onto the chair. Her gaze looked empty as she mumbled, “How… Why hasn’t he been found yet?”
A full day had gone by, how had he not been found?
While holding onto his walking stick, Old Master Fudd said, “If Heaton was still not found in 48 hours, we’ll give up then.”
Verian’s eyes were completely red. She said, “How can you do that? Perhaps, Heaton is still alive and is waiting for us to save him. Please, father… I beg you, don’t give up so soon, okay?”
Old Master Fudd let out a deep, long sigh and said in a depressed tone, “Let’s do it this way then. If Heaton is still not found in 48 hours, we’ll make funeral arrangements for him. Since this incident has gotten the media’s attention, we can no longer hide it. I will personally take the reins in the Fudd Group.”
Verian sobbed. “Father…”
The old man was holding onto his walking stick. He said while facing his back at her, “I will have to head over to the police station now. Looking at how unstable your emotional state is, you should rest at home. I’ll inform you if anything happens.”
…
At the police station.
“Mr. Fudd, we are still in the middle of our investigation. We found out that the car involved in Mr. Heaton’s accident had its brake oil pipe cut. Please think about it clearly, who might Mr. Heaton have had any feuds with previously?”
John’s gaze dimmed as he clutched his walking stick tightly. He frowned deeper.
It was normal for the Fudd Group to make lots of enemies in the market. However, who was bold enough to want to murder Heaton?
“Inspector West, it’s a normal occurrence for the Fudd Group to make enemies in the market. However, it’s also very normal for people to win and lose in the business, so I think no one would be mad enough to murder someone when their businesses fail.”
“Fair point. However, give it a deeper thought. Does President Fudd have any personal vendettas toward him?”
“Well… I’m not too sure about that. However, I will never allow my son to leave this world shrouded in such a mystery. Inspector West, please continue your investigation for us. I will also have some people look into it. I will inform the police department when I have any other information.”
“Alright then, Mr. Fudd. Please…take care now.”
As Dan watched Yanni leave in such a hurry, he could not help but sigh and say, “Truly… It’s a jinx.”
…
When Yanni arrived at the villa, he strode in swiftly.
“Is the doctor here yet?”
Aunt Yen nodded and followed behind Yanni. She said, “He just arrived. He’s taking Miss Joyce’s temperature now. When you left and not long after Miss Joyce saw the news, she was in very poor shape…”
Yanni was stunned. “Saw what news? What news exactly?”
“The major accident that was the talk of the town two days ago, the one where the car crashed into the sea..”
Yanni pouted his lips and ordered, “Go make some porridge. Sammie can eat it when she wakes up.”
“Oh, sure.”
After Yanni entered the room, he asked the doctor, “How is she?”
The doctor said with a frown, “Miss Joyce didn’t catch a cold but her body temperature reads 39.2 degrees and is really high.”
Yanni sat beside Sam while touching her forehead with his huge hand and said in a worried tone, “Does she need to go to the hospital?”
“No, she’ll be infused with fluids in the hospital anyway. I brought the medication with me. Feed it to her and allow her body temperature to drop. Then she should be fine.”
Yanni nodded as he mumbled curiously, “She was fine just now so how did she develop a fever?”
“A sudden fever is usually caused when one is startled or perhaps by some other ailment. I suggest, Mr. Quain, that you bring Miss Joyce to get her blood tested.”
“Alright.”
Startled?
Yanni was sitting beside her while his dark eyes focused on her pale cheeks that were flushed red from the fever. He seemed to be thinking about something.
