[Skyline Plaza: Old Pierson Residences]
"Mildred, I’m so glad that you’ve visited me today." Old Mrs. Pierson reached out to hold Mildred’s hand. Both were seated on the intricate garden chairs in the mini pavilion of the residence. "It’s been a while since you’ve come by, my child. How have you been?"
Mildred’s eyes softened as she held the wrinkled hand in hers. "I’m alright, Old Madam. Have you been well?"
"I am well." Old Mrs. Pierson nodded, looking at Mildred’s face, which had grown older but was still the same little girl she once knew. "The family gathering just happened. Is everything alright, my child?"
"Yes, Old Madam. Surprisingly, it ended... peacefully."
"I heard my grandchild Penny attended."
"She did." Mildred’s smile faltered, thinking that Old Mrs. Pierson didn’t know Penny had been in the kitchen that night as well. But alas...
"Haha! She has a lot of things to tell you! I heard she was dropped off in the kitchen, and she had to do tons of kitchen work!" Old Mrs. Pierson laughed heartily, making Mildred’s heart sink. "You even made her throw out some trash!"
Mildred panicked, adjusting herself on the edge of her seat, just in case she had to kneel. "Old Madam, forgive me for doing that to the matriarch of the family. Everything I say is merely an excuse — I’m sorry, Old Madam."
"Oh, my child." Old Mrs. Pierson cackled, patting Mildred’s hand reassuringly. "It’s alright, my child. I wouldn’t be laughing if she wasn’t happy with it."
"Huh?"
"Penny told me about her experience in the kitchen, and she was happy with it," said Old Mrs. Pierson, smiling reassuringly. "She specifically told me that she thinks you’re a good person."
Mildred’s face softened as she smiled subtly. "She... the young madam said that?"
"Oh, Mildred." Old Mrs. Pierson’s laughter subsided, and she sighed heavily. "Penelope isn’t like Naylani, my child. She’s a lovely child, good in nature. Don’t you worry. She didn’t take how you commanded her in the kitchen the way you might think. Her words were: the kitchen was your territory, not hers."
"I’m so glad..." Mildred heaved a sigh of relief, feeling a huge thorn in her throat disappear.
Mildred wasn’t just trying to keep the younger ones safe by keeping them in the kitchen during the gathering; she was also trying to prepare them mentally. Not everyone who joined the family knew the Piersons well, after all.
"Your mother... oh, my dearest Theresa." Old Mrs. Pierson smiled subtly at Mildred, appreciating her effort and kind intentions in staying in the kitchen. "You... should be sitting at that table, commanding it with a word or two, but you chose to stay in the kitchen. I’m not sure if your mother would be happy, but I’m sure she would be proud of you for doing what you want to do."
"Your mother and I... she was my strongest support during my time," she continued. "If only she were still alive, I’m very sure she’d still be scolding me."
"Old Madam, my mother had a way of talking, but thank you for saying that. She might not approve of me staying in the kitchen and losing my voice at the table the longer I stay away from it because she wasn’t like that. But I do hope she’d see the intentions of my heart."
Old Mrs. Pierson smiled subtly, looking at Mildred appreciatively. "Mildred, that is the reason I called you today."
"Old Madam?"
"You might be upset with what I’m going to say, but you need to regain your voice at the table and reclaim your seat," Old Mrs. Pierson remarked, smiling subtly. "I’m retiring, child, and although Zoren is capable with Penny by his side, I need you to support them."
She paused, holding Mildred’s hand with both of hers. "You’ve spent all these years serving in the kitchen, but Penny is new at the table. I have full confidence in her, but the more support she has, the better. Can you do that for me, my child?"
