The next day...
Penny sucked her inner cheeks, glancing over her shoulder to peek at Mark. She had been trying to console him and perhaps apologize. However, Mark had already told her this morning, as soon as they saw each other, that he was fine and that last night he was just tired.
Then, he kept his distance and gave her the silent treatment. Zoren had told her that if Mark said he was fine, then there was nothing more to worry about. But Penny was still a little concerned because Mark hadn’t provided many details about the meeting.
All he said was that it went well and as planned. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Not that Penny cared much if Mark was angry with her, but she felt bad for him.
’I should just listen to my husband,’ she told herself, shaking her head and snapping her gaze forward as she approached her office. ’Mark is fine.’
Penny mentally nodded and reached for the door of her office to get some work done. Although she wasn’t behind on work despite her extracurricular activities, she wanted to finish ahead of time because other things needed her attention.
But just as Penny opened the door, she stopped. Deep lines appeared between her brows as her eyes fell on Yugi and the mountain of presents and flowers in the corner of her office.
"Uhh... what’s the meaning of this?" she asked as she carefully walked into the office, watching Yugi look in her direction.
"Oh, you’re here!" Yugi straightened his back, smiling. "You’ve got some fans."
"Huh?" Penny instinctively looked back at Mark, only to see him furrowing his brows.
"Don’t worry about the presents. They’ve all gone through inspection, so there’s no way there’s a bomb or anything suspicious in any of them."
"Yugi, I’m surprised that’s what you think I’m worried about," she replied, walking into the office. Instead of going straight to her desk, she approached Yugi and stopped a few steps from the presents. "Please tell me this has nothing to do with any fan club nonsense."
"Fan club?" Yugi scrunched up his nose. "Bold of you to think you have a fan club."
If only he knew.
He shook his head, thinking Penny’s imagination was running wild so early. "They’re from your in-laws."
"Huh?"
"They didn’t all come from the same people, of course. But all the senders were from the Pierson family. Some welcome you into the family, while others wish you well." Yugi then cocked his head, eyes falling on her. "I think they’re sending these gifts because they didn’t get to send you one during your wedding. So, I’m guessing they’re wedding gifts, considering some of them are traditional gifts for newlywed couples."
Penny’s face contorted. "How did I not see this coming?" she murmured, thinking that her day yesterday had been quite peaceful. The only big news the day before had been Bella giving her shares to Penny and Allen regaining consciousness, but nothing else.
"I already put some in there. It’s full now — why did you think I put some presents in here?" He tilted his head to the side, blinking innocently. "Penny, I congratulate you that your first family meeting with your husband is a success. But we’re doing double the work with all these gifts."
"I know that." Her face twisted again, knowing she didn’t have time for this. After a moment, she snapped her eyes and looked at her cousin as if she had just had a good idea. "I have a room upstairs. Just put them all in there. Also, take these out of my office. I don’t need these things in here."
After saying that, Penny turned her back on him and walked to her desk. Meanwhile, Yugi nodded.
"I thought you didn’t want your personal space cluttered with stuff, but very well!" he grinned, walking toward the door. "I’ll be back later. For now, I’ll do some work — also, Penny, I sent you the reports on the stock graph. Yesterday was fun."
Yugi winked at her and smirked before he closed the door, leaving Penny staring at it.
"Huh..." She shook her head, smiling because Yugi just knew how to salvage her mood. With that thought in mind, Penny shrugged and approached her desk. Just as she sat down, she stopped as she noticed the stacked envelopes on the desk.
Reaching out to check them, her face twitched.
"These are letters from my in-laws," she blurted out in dismay, scrunching up her nose as she glanced at the gifts. "I should tell my husband his family is harassing me."
But then, she noticed one of the envelopes next to the one on top. Picking it out, her lips curled up.
"Aunt Mildred also sent me one."
