Chapter 683: Don’t

[We’re done talking. We’re done, and we agreed to that mutually.]

Nina wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, reminded of the words she had told him earlier that day. Snapping her eyes back to where Finn was lying, her lips quivered as her heart ached. She clasped his hand tighter, hoping a squeeze was enough to wake him up.

But alas, she knew it wasn’t enough.

With the beat of his heart heard through a beep and his life being monitored by some lines, she knew it wasn’t enough. Nina held his hand, reaching out to touch his bandaged cheek.

"Finn," she whispered, almost choking on her breath. "Babe... I’m sorry."

If she could have predicted this would happen, she would’ve been kinder with her words. If she had known this would happen, she probably wouldn’t have left him that day. Although that thinking was quickly countered by reason, she simply didn’t care anymore. She didn’t even know what to think anymore.

All she knew was that Finn was probably carrying the weight of what she had told him in that accident.

[I miss you... that’s why I came to find you.]

Nina held her breath, her neck turning taut and her eyes filling with tears. Her vision began to blur again, her sniffles harmonizing with the mechanical noise of the heart monitor.

"Please..." she hiccuped, crying through gritted teeth. "Please don’t do this to me. Not like this, please. Let’s not separate like this."

Her fingertips caressed his bandages, tears streaming down her face. "Let’s not... separate like this."

Because at the end of the day, Nina never wished for his karma. If anything, even if they broke up— even if she broke up with him—she still wished him well. She still wished him the best in life, even though she wasn’t there anymore.

"Please... if there’s anyone hearing me..." she whispered, praying from her heart. "Let him recover."

For a while, Nina stayed quiet, with only her sniffles echoing in the ward. She constantly wiped her eyes, but to no avail. All she could do right now was cry, pray, and be with him; be with the love of her life whom she had to let go because of... the situation.

As Nina held his hand, wiping her eyes for the umpteenth time, Finn’s eyes slowly parted. His vision was blurry, and the first thing he heard was the mechanical beep of his heart. He blinked weakly, in a state of confusion, while the medication in his system made him groggy.

He blinked and blinked until he caught a figure from his side. Moving his eyes to the figure, he blinked weakly once more.

Nina sniffed hard as she forced herself to look at him. The second her eyes landed on him and saw him staring back, her heart clenched as her breath hitched.

She would be there for him.

Even with what happened to their relationship, she would be there for him. She wouldn’t leave him, and she would always stay by his side for as long as he needed her to. All of this didn’t come out of her mouth, but he could see it clearly in her eyes.

"Don’t..." he breathed out, his face crumpling as if just saying that word hurt him from within.

"Huh?" Nina furrowed her brows, only to panic when she saw pain on his face. "Finn, you don’t have to talk, okay? Don’t force it. You shouldn’t be talking right now. The doctors will be here any second now, so... it’s okay. We can talk again once you’re better, hmm?"

But Finn, as though he didn’t hear her, just stared at her with the same look in his eyes. Nina pressed her lips together, unable to ignore that same look he would usually give her. It wasn’t like this was how he looked at her on normal days, but there were times he would have this look in his eyes that had been a constant mystery to her.

"Don’t..." Finn whispered once again, his breathing growing heavy as the sound of the heart monitor picked up its pace. "... cry... for me."

Her breath hitched as soon as those words rolled out of his mouth, making her even more teary. However, with the sound of the heart monitor going crazy, Nina couldn’t focus on it.

"Finn?" she panicked, looking at the monitor before setting her eyes back on him. When his body started convulsing, she quickly rose to her feet while screaming for help. "Finn!"
