Pampered by my three brothers: the return of the neglected heiress novel Chapter 1494

Chapter 1494: Convincing him to break off the engagement

Breaking off Finn and Cassandra’s engagement was not easy. They had been destined to marry since childhood, and their wedding was anticipated by everyone. How Finn managed to dissolve it wasn’t simple either, but the Davis family supported his decision. Moreover, they assured that this wouldn’t strain their families’ relationship.

And it held true.

The Davis family remained staunch supporters of the Smiths. Finn’s parents maintained a cordial relationship with Senator Smith and Cassandra’s parents.

So, if there was someone who could break off this engagement, that would be Jonathan.

Even so, in Cassandra’s heart, there was a lingering unease. Yet, a small part of her hoped and wanted to believe in Jonathan and the Pierson family.

Ding Dong!

Standing at the villa’s entrance, Cassandra drew a deep breath. She pursed her lips, fixated on the door, waiting for someone to open it. After a moment, she heard movement inside, and the door swung open.

"Cassy?" Jonathan’s face lit up with surprise as their eyes met. "I didn’t expect you tonight."

She forced a smile. "Is this a bad time?"

"Not at all," he smiled, pushing the door wider. "Please, come in."

"Thank you," she murmured as she entered, her gaze following him.

"Have you eaten? I didn’t anticipate your visit, but I can check what’s left." Jonathan started, turning to her, only to see her shake her head.

"I’m fine," she assured him. "I just finished dinner with my family."

"Oh, a family dinner?"

"Mhm." Her chest rose and fell heavily as she watched him extend his hand.

"Then, shall we at least sit?" A gentle smile graced his face as he waited for her to take his hand.

A faint smile appeared on her face as she clasped his hand, allowing him to lead her to the living area. As they settled down, Jonathan turned to her. freewebnøvel.com

"Let me get you some water, or would you prefer something else?"

"I’m fine."

"Cassy," he frowned slightly. "You can’t just drop by without me offering anything, right?"

His frown softened, his hand gently brushing her hair back. "I’ll be quick."

With that, Jonathan stood up. But just as he did, Cassandra suddenly gripped his arm to stop him. Looking back at her, his brow furrowed at the look in her eyes.

Hesitation flickered in her eyes as an unknown fear slowly gripped her heart. "Joe, I came because I need to talk about our engagement."

"..." Jonathan remained silent, sitting back beside her. "What about it?"

"Well," Cassandra gulped, reaching for his hand to clasp it. "Joe, can I ask you something?"

"What is it?"

"Do you... Do you love me?"

His brow furrowed even more at her question before a soft chuckle escaped him. "Is that even a question, Cassy?"

"Will you answer it?"

"I’ve never met anyone and thought to myself, ’I want to spend the rest of my life with her,’" he began. "Do you remember when we first met? It was wild, but even when I thought you were a bit of a handful, I had to admit you were stunning."

This was the Jonathan she knew, the man she had somehow fallen in love with. Or at least, the man she thought she had fallen in love with. Unlike other men she had dated, Jonathan was everything she wanted in a man.

"I don’t want to be engaged—I don’t want to get married," she confessed, feeling compelled to stop herself. But she couldn’t. Once the words escaped her lips, she couldn’t stop. "I think this is a mistake, Joe. I’ve made a mistake."

"..." Jonathan opened his mouth, but no words came out. Confusion flickered in his eyes. "A mistake?"

"I know it’s me. I’m to blame," she admitted. "And I want to make it right."

"You’re making it right by wanting me to call off the engagement?"

"Joe." Cassandra drew closer to him. "I’m sorry, but this won’t work."

"How can you be so sure?"

"I—" She halted, swallowing the tension in her throat.

How could she be sure it wouldn’t work?

It was due to numerous factors. It wasn’t just him—it was also her. Cassandra had made this decision out of pity. She knew her family would provide a safety net for Jonathan, preventing the Pierson family from looking down on him.

Moreover, Cassandra was easily swayed when Dean showed interest in her. Even though nothing physical had occurred, a transgression had already been committed.

She needed out.

Cassandra knew she had to leave Anteca and forget. The longer she stayed, the less she recognized herself. She wasn’t a kind person; she was capable of harming others, but not those who genuinely cared for her. But lately, she had started hurting even those she cared about.

She had to stop herself before things went awry. And now, her only hope was Jonathan.

"Joe..." Cassandra bit her lip, tears welling in her eyes. "I’m sorry. Please, let me go."
