Take those macarons to the children, Adam said as they pulled up to the house. The morning’s corporate warfare had left him drained, but thinking about the kids reactions brought a hint of warmth to his voice.
“Right away, sir. Thomas collected the elegant box from La Maison Douce, hiding a smile at how his usually stern boss had gone soft over three tiny troublemakers.
When Irene opened the door to Thomas’s knock, her eyebrows lifted slightly at finding him alone. “Thomas? Everything okay?”
All good, he grinned, holding up the beautifully wrapped box. “Mr. Haven picked these up at La Maison Douce. Thought the kids might like them.”
The moment the box touched the coffee table, a thunder of small fees announced incoming chaos. The triplets came barreling down the stairs like a miniature avalanche, their faces falling slightly when they spotted only Thomas.
“Aww, Uncle Adam didn’t come? Lily’s bottom lip crept out in a tiny pout.
“We were hoping he’d have tea with us,” Lucas added hopefully. “Mom made her special herbal blend and everything!”
“Yeah, it’s perfect for macarons!” Alex chimed in, giving Thomas his best persuasive look.
Lily tugged at Thomas’s sleeve. “Could you maybe ask him? Pretty please with sugar on top?”
Those three hopeful faces could probably charm diamonds out of rocks. Thomas found himself hurrying back next door before he even realized he’d agreed.
“Sir?” he stuck his head into Adam’s study. “The kids were hoping you might join them for tea. They’ve got this whole setup ready and everything.”
Adam glanced at his laptop, clearly weighing the stack of urgent emails against three disappointed little faces. After a moment, he sighed. “Alright. Five minutes.”
The garden’s rest area had been transformed into something straight out of a fancy tea shop, complete with delicate cups and saucers that definitely hadn’t appeared by accident. Joseph and Irene were deep in a game of Go, while steam curled invitingly from a pot of herbal tea.
“Wow, look!” Lily gasped in delight, holding up a rainbow macaron with wide–eyed wonder. “The colors change when you touch them! It’s like magic!”
“Best. Macarons. Ever.” Lucas managed between bites, his cheeks puffed out like a chipmunk’s.
Meanwhile, Alex had planted himself by the Go board with the intensity of a chess grandmaster. His eyes tracked every move until suddenly – “Great–grandfather, wait? He pointed urgently at the board. “That’s Mom’s trap right there. You want this spot instead.”
Joseph peered where Alex was pointing, his weathered face lighting up. “Well, well! Sharp eyes, young man!”
“Hey Arene laughed, giving Alex a mock–stern look. “Whatever happened to ‘silence during the game‘, hm? Traitor!”
Alex grinned unrepentantly. ‘Sorry Mom, but I had to save Great–grandfather from your evil master plan!”
Joseph’s belly laugh shook the table. “That’s my boy! Coming to an old man’s rescue!”
“Oh sure, team up against me, Irene rolled her eyes, fighting back a mile. See if I make your favorite dumplings tonight!”

Chapter 76
The game continued with Alex providing running commentary, much to everyone’s amusement. Irene made a clever defensive move that drew appreciative murmurs from the onlookers–even Alex paused his commentary for a moment, studying the board with renewed intensity. When Joseph reached for what looked like a promising move, Alex practically bounced in place.
“No, no- look here instead!” He carefully placed the stone in a completely different spot. See? Now you’ve got a whole new path opened up!
Adam had been quietly analyzing the board, already seeing how Irene’s strategy would play out. But Alex’s grasp of the game’s complexities was genuinely impressive. You play Go?” he asked, unable to hide his interest.
Just casually, Alex shrugged, though his eyes lit up at Adam’s attention. “Been practicing on my iPad.”
Thomas shook his head in amazement. “Seriously, Dr. Sterling, what’s your secret? These kids are like tiny geniuses!”
“Of course they’re brilliant,” Irene smiled proudly. “They’re my kids aren’t they?”
“Well yeah, Mom’s super smart, Lucas piped up, spraying macaron crumbs everywhere. “But we got the extra genius genes from
Dad!
Oh really?” Irene reached over to tickle him mercilessly. “Getting sassy with your mom now, are we?”
“Mercy! Mercy!” Lucas squealed between giggles. “Can’t help it if it’s true!”
