Chapter 48
This is bad, this is really bad.” Thomas slammed on the brakes, his knuckles going white against the steering wheel. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead as the full impact of what just happened hit him like a truck. The luxury sedan jerked to a stop in the middle of the estate’s private road.
Watching Irene’s retreating figure through the windshield, he felt his heart sink. Years of careful planning, countless specialists consulted, millions spent finding the right doctor all potentially ruined because of one stupid glass of wine.
He practically fell out of the car in his rush to catch up with her. ‘Dr. Sterling, wait up! Please – about ending the treatment… is it because of the drinking? The alcohol during treatment?”
Irene whirled around so fast her hair whipped through the air. Her arms crossed over her chest as she fixed Thomas with a glare that could’ve frozen hell itself. “You know exactly what his condition is like. No alcohol during treatment means NO alcohol – zero, zilch, nada! Nothing that could mess with nerve regeneration! The alcohol will screw up the medication.” Her voice rose with each word, sharp with genuine fury. “Do you have any idea how much work I put into that treatment plan? And this is how seriously you
take it?”
She took a step closer, her heels clicking against the pavement like angry exclamation points. “I’m a doctor, not a miracle worker! I can’t help a patient who won’t help himself!”
Thomas’s shoulders slumped as he withered under her justified anger, “Look, Dr. Sterling, your medical expertise is absolutely unmatched. This was totally our bad. Mr. Haven has to meet clients every day, and some situations require… but tonight it really was just one tiny glass! I swear on my life it won’t happen again!”
God, he thought desperately, she’s even scarier than the boss.
Irene let out a laugh that could’ve cut glass. “Right, because your promise means so much.”
“Thomas.” Adam’s voice cut through the tension from inside the car, cold as arctic ice.
“Yes, sir?” Thomas snapped to attention automatically.
“Cancel all social obligations involving alcohol.”
Through the open window, Adam’s quiet authority carried across the night air. His expression remained carefully neutral as he addressed Irene, but something in his eyes had changed. “This was our oversight – we weren’t aware of the restrictions. Dr. Sterling, if you provide a detailed list of prohibited items, I will follow it strictly.”
Irene turned to face the car window fully, her eyebrows shooting up. You serious?”
“Completely.”
She studied his face for a long moment, looking for any sign of BS. Finding none, she let out a small sigh. Fine. Since you actually seem sorry, I’ll let it slide this once. But I mean it – there better not be a next time. Got it?”
Thomas watched this exchange with growing amazement. In all his years working for Haven Enterprise, he’d never seen anyone dare to read Mr. Haven the riot act like this – and he’d definitely never seen his boss take criticism so quietly. Other women practically tiptoed around Adam, terrified of setting him off. Yet here was Dr. Sterling, laying down the law like she was d misbehaving kid rather than one of Silver City’s most powerful CEOs.

“Dr. Sterling,” he ventured carefully, since we’re all heading back anyway, need a ride?”
Irene’s anger had cooled somewhat, though her posture remained stiff as she slid into the backseat. She immediately pulled out her phone and started typing rapidly, completely focused on compiling the promised list of restrictions.

Chapter 48
The drive back was quiet except for the soft tapping of Irene’s fingers against her phone screen. Thomas kept sneaking glances in the rearview mirror, still processing what he’d witnessed. Mr. Haven, the man who could make corporate giants shake in their boots with a single look, had just been thoroughly told off by this petite doctor and had actually agreed to change his behavior.
When they arrived at the villas, Irene immediately thrust her phone toward Adam. “Here. This should cover everything. And 1 mean it if I catch you breaking any of these rules again, don’t say I didn warn you! These need to be followed exactly – we clear?”
“Crystal.” Adam took the phone, scanning the list with careful attention. “Anything else I should know?”
“For now, this covers the basics.” Irene’s expression softened slightly as she shifted into doctor mode. “Look, with your limited mobility, your body’s already in a weakened state. Building up your strength is crucial – the nerve treatments ahead aren’t going to be a walk in the park. I’d suggest printing out a bunch of copies of this list and sticking them where you’ll see them regularly.”
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small bottle of pills. Adam eyed them suspiciously. “What are these?”
“Oh for crying out loud,” Irene rolled her eyes so hard it looked painful. “Just take them! What, you think I’m trying to poison you or something? Why would I care about your drinking if I wanted to hurt you? These are specialty meds you couldn’t buy even if you tried. Consider yourself lucky!”
Without warning, she shook out a pill and reached toward his mouth. The sudden movement caught Adam off guard. His lips brushed against her fingertips as she administered the medicine, and they both froze. Their eyes met in the dim light of the entrance, the accidental contact sending an unexpected jolt through both of them.
Irene yanked her hand back like she’d touched a live wire. “There! That’s how you should be – just do what you’re told instead of asking a million questions.”
