Chapter 38
Mom? What’s wrong?” Three pairs of identical eyes fixed on Irene a her face drained of color, her knuckles white around her
phone.
“Your great–grandfather’s in the hospital.” Her voice shook slightly. e fell.”
“We want to come too!” the triplets chorused immediately, already moving toward her.
Irene nodded, her mind racing. They needed to get to the hospital immediately, but… She glanced out the window at their empty driveway. Right. No car.
“Come on,” she said, already heading for the door. Her heels clicked against the marble floor with deadly purpose as she strode next door. The triplets hurried to keep up, sensing the urgency in their mother’s movements.
Thomas opened the door before she could knock. His eyes widened slightly at her expression.
“Is Mr. Haven available?” The words came out clipped and precise. “Its urgent.”
Adam appeared moments later, wheeling himself into view. One look at her face and his usual stern expression shifted to something more alert.
“My grandfather’s in the hospital.” Irene’s voice carried barely controlled tension. “Could I borrow a car?”
“Thomas will drive you.” Adam’s response was immediate. “You’re in no state to drive yourself.”
The raw concern in her eyes made something in his chest tighten. He’d never seen her like this – all sharp edges and barely contained fury.
“Thank you.” The words came out rough with emotion.
Minutes later, they were speeding toward Silver City Central Hospital in one of Haven Enterprise’s luxury sedans. Irene sat rigid in the back seat, her children pressed close on either side. The usually chatty triplets remained silent, picking up on their mother’s
tension.
As they pulled up to the hospital entrance, Irene was already reaching for the door. “Thank you, Thomas.”
“Of course, Dr. Sterling.”
She hurried through the hospital corridors, her children keeping perfect pace. The click of her heels against the polished floor echoed like gunshots. Staff and visitors instinctively moved aside, something in her expression warning them not to get in her way.
When she reached her grandfather’s room, the scene that greeted her made her blood boil. Anna stood by the bed, tears streaming down her perfectly made–up face as she wrung her hands dramatically.
“It’s all my fault!” she wailed, dabbing at her eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief. “I just wanted to stop him from leaving, I didn’t mean to-”
“My poor darling, Rose crooned, wrapping an arm around her adopted daughter. “Of course you didn’t mean it! This is all Irene’s fault – if she hadn’t tried to lure Father away with her scheming…”
Irene entrance silenced the room. The door hit the wall with enough force to make the windows rattle. Every head turned at the
sound.
“What are you doing here?” Rose’s voice dripped venom.

Nathan stepped forward, his expression thunderous. “You shouldn’t trying to move in with you-

“Move.” Irene’s voice could have frozen hell itself. When Nathan didn’t immediately comply, her next words came out as a growl: “Get. Out. Of. My. Way.”
“You have no right-
“No right?” Irene’s laugh was sharp as broken glass. “She puts her hands on my grandfather, and I have no right? Her eyes locked onto Anna, who took an involuntary step back. “You really think a few crocodile tears will save you?”
“I–I didn’t mean-” Anna started, her perfectly crafted victim act crumbling under Irene’s arctic glare.
“Shut up.” The words cracked like a whip. “You touch him again – you so much as breathe in his direction – and I will end you. Understand?” Her voice dropped to a deadly whisper. “You think this is a game? Try me. I’ll make you wish you’d never heard the name Sterling.”
