Thomas couldn’t help the laugh that escaped him. In all his years working for Haven Enterprise, he’d never heard anyone compare his powerful, intimidating boss to “a side of beef in the butcher’s willow.” The mental image was just too much.
Irene caught herself, realizing how that must have sounded. “Sorry, that’s just something we used to say in medical school,” she explained quickly. “It helps maintain professional distance during examinations.”
*No need to explain.” Adam’s voice could have frozen fire. “This isn’t teaching hospital.”
Irene managed an awkward smile, suddenly very aware that this was in fact, his private bedroom. The medical equipment might be professional grade, but the setting was decidedly not clinical. Adam feclined against the headboard in silk pajamas, and the intimacy of the situation wasn’t lost on her.
She sat down at the edge of the bed, focusing on arranging her equipment with practiced efficiency. “Adam,” she said carefully, “you are objectively more attractive than the average patient. But I assure you, I maintain strict professional boundaries. Besides,” she gestured toward Thomas, who was hovering nearby, “we’re not exactly alone. This is simply a medical procedure there’s no need for
concern.”
“Thomas, could you help roll up his pant legs? Just to the knees will be fine.”
As Thomas carefully assisted, Irene explained, “The nerve points we need to treat are primarily in your calves. Last time’s clothing change was only necessary because of your formal wear.”
She felt oddly defensive about her professional integrity. But as Thomas stepped back, the words died in her throat.
Oh.
She really shouldn’t have made that butcher shop comparison.
The Adam Haven she was used to seeing commanded attention from his wheelchair – all crisp suits and unapproachable CEO energy. This version, lounging against silk pillows in perfectly tailored sleepwear, was… different. The fabric draped in ways that suggested an impressive physique beneath, and the casual elegance of his pose was almost unfair.
Their eyes met briefly. Irene quickly looked away, mentally scolding herself. Focus. You’re a doctor, for crying out loud.
She placed the electrodes with careful precision, hyper–aware of maintaining a clinical touch. “Please tell me if you feel anything at
all.”
“There.” Adam’s response was immediate. “I can feel it now.”
“What kind of sensation?”
“Like a current. Sharp, almost painful.”
Irene nodded, making careful notes while adjusting the stimulation levels. She worked methodically through each nerve point, recording every response. By the time she finished, a light sheen of sweat had formed on her forehead.
Thomas appeared with water, which she accepted gratefully. “We’ll need to observe for about thirty minutes to ensure there’s no
adverse reaction.”
The clock showed 10:30 PM by the time she completed her final checks. Her shoulders ached from maintaining precise control for so long. I’ll go prepare the therapeutic bath,” she said, gathering her notes. “The data looks promising – the nerve responses are stronger than last time.”

She was almost to the door when Thomas called out. “Dr. Sterling, wit!”
She turned, surprised by the urgency in his voice.
“Could you… help us get the boss to the bathroom?”
Even sitting down, Adam cut an imposing figure. His height and build made Thomas’s request seem suddenly daunting.
“Alright, Irene agreed, trying to sound casual as she stepped forward to help.
Thomas bent to support Adam from the bed, and Irene moved to assist. She wasn’t prepared for just how solid Adam was with Thomas bearing most of the weight, she had to slip her arm around his waist to properly support him.

While Irene was focused entirely on the logistics of the task, Adam went suddenly rigid at her touch. Her small hand at his waist, warm even through the silk of his pajamas, was impossible to ignore His jaw tightened as she drew closer, her subtle jasmine scent filling his senses.
