Chapter 29: Not Letting Irene Win
John stood at his study window, watching his father talk to the corporate lawyer in the garden below. His face darkened with each passing minute. Behind him, Rose twisted her diamond bracelet, a nervous habit she’d never quite kicked,
“Fourth meeting this week,” John muttered, his voice tight with anger. Even got the corporate lawyers involved now. The old man’s really going through with this.”
Rose let out a frustrated sigh. “I tried everything today. Even broke out his favorite tea and those fancy cookies he loves. But he wouldn’t even look at me! Just kept saying ‘it’s already decided like me broken record.”
“Has he lost his mind?” John spun around, practically radiating fury. Twenty percent of Sterling Group- that’s our foundation! And he wants to just hand it over to Irene?” He said her name like it was poison. “What’s next, let her run the whole company?”
“This is insane.” Rose’s perfectly painted lips curved into a sneer. “She disappears for five years, then waltzes back in thinking she can claim the family fortune? Who does she think she is?”
The click of heels announced Anna’s arrival. She glided in looking picture–perfect, though inside she was seething. But she kept her voice sweet as honey when she spoke.
“Mom, Dad, please calm down,” she soothed, while her eyes sparkled with hidden malice. “Why not call the boys home? They’re the real heirs to the company. Once Grandfather sees them, he’ll remember who really deserves those shares.”
I can’t have it, she thought bitterly, there’s no way I’m letting that nobody get her hands on it.
John paced the room, getting more worked up by the second. Brandom was off racing cars in Europe, posting about it all over Instagram. Wesley had some fancy art show in Paris and wouldn’t even take his calls. His blood pressure spiked just thinking about
“Forget it!” He stopped abruptly, rubbing his temples. “Nathan’s the only one who understands business. Brandon?” He scoffed. “Too busy posting racing photos to care about the company. And Wesley? His voice dripped with disdain. “Probably painting in some artsy Paris cafe, thinking he’s the next Picasso. Just get Nathan back.
–
Rose understood perfectly – Nathan had always been their golden child. Her fingers trembled slightly as she dialed, partly from anger, partly from calculated effect. Time to play up the family crisis.
Anna moved closer to Rose, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. The perfect picture of a dutiful daughter. Inside, though, she was seething. Two percent. They’d given her a measly two percent of shares while Irene might get twenty? After everything I’ve done for this family? But she kept her face carefully concerned, even as bitter thoughts churned beneath her polished surface.
“Nathan! Thank god you answered,” Rose started, her voice quivering “We’ve got a major problem. It’s about your grandfather – we’re really worried about him.”
Anna squeezed her mother’s shoulder gently, playing her part to perfection. Let them think she was just being supportive. Nobody needed to know she was already planning how to use Nathan’s return to her advantage. After all, he’d always liked her better than Irene and unlike some people, she knew exactly how to leverage family connections.
Rose’s voice trembled with perfectly calculated distress as she continued her call. “Irene’s back from R Country. We just wanted her to sign those engagement papers, but now she’s going after your grandfather! She’s totally manipulating him, trying to get his
shares!”
There was a pause. “Really?” Nathan’s voice was cool as ice. “She’s got some nerve. Guess some people never change.”
“Last night,” Nathan said, his voice going gentle like it always did with his grandfather. He paused before adding casually, “Heard my sister’s back. They say she’s different now. Since you two are close, maybe we could all have dinner together?”
