Chapter 268
y Dauuy S Billionaire Empire
Irene pressed against the wall, heart hammering. Dust swirled in the slanted light through dirty windows. Her torn blouse hung loose, exposing skin that stung om rough handling.
“Done fighting yet?” The leader’s cigarette breath hit her face as he leaned closer. “Nobody’s coming for you.”
She spat at him. His hand flew up, ready to strike-
The door exploded inward with a deafening crash. Men in black poured in, moving like shadows.
“DOWN! NOW!”
The leader lunged for Irene, but was slammed face–first into the wall before he could touch her. Another captor bolted for the window only to be tackled hard onto the floor.
Thomas stepped in last, eyes finding Irene immediately. Something flashed across his usually impassive face.
“Secure them all,” he said with eerie calm. “Dr. Sterling first.”
The team worked like clockwork, zip–tying the cursing men who now lay face–down. One officer approached Irene carefully.
“You’re safe now,” he said quietly. “Are you hurt?”
Her legs felt like jelly as the adrenaline wore off. She clutched her torn blouse with shaking fingers.
Thomas came over, his eyes concerned but professional. “He’s outside,” he said, voice softer than usual. “Wouldn’t stay behind.”
Wheels scraped against the uneven floor. Adam appeared in the doorway, fury vanishing from his face the moment he saw her.
Irene’s walls crumbled. After hours of forced bravery, seeing him broke something loose inside her. Her heart hammered against her ribs as relief flooded through her veins. He came for me. He really came. Her legs felt like water as she stumbled forward.
“Adam,” she whispered, her voice cracking, tears blurring her vision.
What happened next seemed to slow time itself.
Adam gripped his wheelchair armrests, jaw set with determination. He took a deep breath and began pushing himself upward.
“Sir- Thomas started, then froze at Adam’s look.
Sweat beaded on Adam’s forehead as he forced his legs to work. Each inch upward clearly cost him, muscles straining beneath his clothes. The pain etched deep lines around his mouth, but his eyes never left hers. He kept going, driven by something far stronger than physical limits.
“Holy shit,” Thomas murmured, mask of composure slipping completely.
Irene’s breath caught in her throat. He’s standing. For me. Her heart squeezed so tight she couldn’t breathe. In all their sessions, all their time together, she’d never seen him even attempt to stand. Yet here he was, enduring what must be excruciating pain, just to hold her.
Adam stood fully now, swaying slightly but upright, eyes locked on Irene like she was his only anchor in the world.
Adam!” Irene’s voice broke as she stumbled the final steps, tears flowing freely down her cheeks.
