Chapter 137
Lily, maybe pick something eles. Adam started, trying to bail trend out. Your mom doesn’t have to
The words died in his throat as Irene moved toward him. Everyone went quiet, the air suddenly thick with anticipation. Ewe Thomas just sat there, cards forgotten in his hands.
When Irene bent down, her scent caught Adam off guard–something flowery mixed with the mineral smell from the springs His fingers dug into his wheelchair armrests.
Her hands landed on his shoulders without warning. The touch zinged through him like a live wire, and it had zero to do with her being his doctor. Everyone in the room held their breath
She didn’t go for his cheek at all. Instead, her lips touched his forehead–somehow way more personal than what anyone expected Not some quick game–required peck, but something that lasted, soft but meaningful,
Their shadows joined on the wall, her slim shape Jeaning into his wheelchair, making a picture that just looked… front.
When she straightened up, her cheeks had turned pink. “Done,” she said, her voice a little shaky.
Adam couldn’t move, like someone had hit pause on his world. His brain–usually running a million calculations at once–just stopped working. Everything slowed down.
At twenty–six, Adam had never let anyone get close to the real him. After the accident, his wheelchair became his shield, keeping
everyone away.
Now this small kiss was changing everything. The spot on his forehead stayed warm, like it wanted him to remember. His logical side said it was just a game, but something deeper–something he’d buried–was waking up.
The triplets‘ faces lit up, trading looks that screamed “We did it!” They’d been hoping for a little cheek kiss, but this was so much better.
“Irene…” Adam found his voice, but whatever he meant to say next just vanished. His fingers tapped once on the armrest.
Irene twisted her robe in her fingers behind her back, making herself look him in the eye. “Sorry if that crossed a line.”
What the hell was I thinking?
Adam watched her talk, weirdly focused on her lips.
“Don’t ever make that request again,” Irene warned the triplets, turning away before Adam could see how red her face was getting.
The triplets traded smug looks. “If Mom doesn’t like it,” Lucas said sweetly, “we won’t bring it up again.”
“Time for bed!” Lucas announced, stretching dramatically.
Alex nodded. “Yeah, gotta get up early tomorrow.”
Lily yawned fakely. “So tired.”
The triplets exchanged victorious glances. Mission accomplished.
Irene checked her watch. “Time for your treatment.”
Game over.

Chapter 137.
The triplets and Thomas jumped up, ready to bolt, when Irene blurted, ‘You guys can stay.”
Adam glanced at her.
Smooth move, Irene. Because being alone with him after that kiss is exotly what you need right now.
Like some cosmic joke, the usually stuck–to–Adam–like glue triplets uddenly got all considerate. ‘We don’t want to get in the way of your treatment, Mom, Alex said, sounding weirdly grown–up.
Thomas grabbed the out like it was the last lifeboat. I’ll put them to bed,” he said, practically running for the door with three little shadows behind him.
The door shut with a click that sounded way too loud.
Irene stared at the empty doorway too long before picking up her equipment, almost fumbling a sensor when she turned and caught
Adam’s eye.
She cleared her throat. “Let’s start.”
“Okay, Adam answered, looking annoyingly calm while her brain was going haywire.
When she placed the first electrode, her fingers brushed his skin. The touch sent a weird tingle up her arm that had nothing to do with the medical gear. She almost pulled back, but her doctor training kicked in.
Adam’s breathing hitched–so slight you’d miss it if you weren’t paying attention. His eyes dropped to the curve of her neck as she worked. Something warm and strange spread through his chest.
What’s happening to me?
Irene set each device exactly where it needed to go, sneaking a peek at his face when she thought he wasn’t looking.
He’s totally cool while I’m acting like some lovesick teenager. Get a grip.
She forced herself into doctor mode, focusing on the treatment instead of the guy getting it.
“All set,” she said, packing up quickly. “I should head out.”
Adam just nodded, watching her the whole way to the door.
Back in her room, she found the triplets crashed out across the bed.
Thomas slumped at the table, holding his head up with one hand. He jumped up when she came in, rubbing his bloodshot eyes. “All done?”
“Yeah. Go get some sleep. Thanks for watching them.”
“No big deal,” he yawned so hard it looked painful. “Thanks for patching up the boss.” Another huge yawn made his eyes water. Embarrassed, he mumbled goodnight and stumbled out.
Irene locked up and leaned against the door, watching her sleeping kids. They were piled together like puppies, faces peaceful in sleep.
Real smooth operators, these three.
All those “random” times alone with Adam, every setup… Only someone completely clueless would miss what they were doing.
