Chapter 120
Joseph’s lips quirked into a smile as he spotted the unexpected visitors. Irene had just opened her mouth to put Richard in his place when a stifled laugh cut through the tension. She whipped around to find three tiny figures hovering at the entrance to the hospital corridor.
The triplets stood there with matching mischievous expressions, clearly having caught the whole drama. Behind them, Adam sat in his wheelchair looking faintly amused while Thomas hovered nearby always on alert.
Every head in the hallway turned toward the sound. The triplets, feeling all eyes on them, straightened their little shoulders and marched directly toward Richard. Their synchronized movement would have been funny if they hadn’t looked so serious.
Alex planted himself squarely in front of Richard, all three feet of him vibrating with indignation.
“Dude, seriously?” Alex tilted his head back to meet Richard’s gaze. The nerve of you! Mom has way better options than you. Who do you think you are?” He crossed his arms, looking utterly disgusted. “And FYI, if you’re trying to be our stepdad, don’t we get a
vote?”
Richard blinked rapidly, completely thrown by being dressed down by a kindergartner.
Lily stepped up beside her brother, pigtails quivering with righteous anger. “Yeah! You’re not even close to Uncle Adam. Not even one finger!” She held up her pinky for dramatic effect. “Mom doesn’t like you, and guess what? Neither do we!”
Richard’s face darkened as he glared down at the kids, but Lucas wasn’t remotely intimidated.
“Look, mister,” Lucas said with exaggerated patience, like he was explaining something to someone very slow, “just own your mess instead of blaming Mom. Anna seems fine. You guys match. Just stay away from our mom, ‘kay?”
The triplets exchanged a quick glance that said it all: What a loser. Can’t even own his mistakes and still harassing Mom. Pathetic.
Having thoroughly demolished Richard’s ego, they turned to Irene with identical looks of fierce protectiveness. The message couldn’t have been clearer–nobody messes with their mom.
Irene snapped out of her shock and rushed forward, instinctively positioning herself between her kids and Richard. “What the How did you get here?” She pulled them closer, shooting a nervous glance at Richard’s thunderous expression.
“They overheard your call,” Adam said, wheeling himself forward. “Couldn’t talk them out of checking on you.”
A rush of warmth flooded Irene’s chest. After feeling jealous about her kids bonding with Brandon and the Havens, here they were, racing to her defense. She bit back a smile. “I’m fine, you little troublemakers. Nothing to worry about.”
John and Nathan stood frozen, eyes darting between Adam and Irene The casual familiarity between them was obvious, father and son exchanged a quick glance that said everything: Well, no wonder she turned Richard down. Adam versus Richard? Not even a
contest.
Joseph looked downright smug as he surveyed the scene. He turned to face the Vein family, suddenly seeming taller despite his stooped shoulders.
“Richard,” he barked, “get over yourself. You had your shot and blew it.” He thumped his cane for emphasis. Now my granddaughter has people who actually appreciate her. You could break off a hundred engagements and I still wouldn’t let you anywhere near her.
Dream on.”
Having demolished Richard’s hopes, Joseph swiveled toward John and Rose, his eyes flashing dangerously.
And you two idiots,” he continued, voice razor–sharp. “Fawning over someone else 3 kid while your own daughter gets kicked around. You really are sterling examples of the Sterling family.”

Chapter 120
John and Rose went scarlet, trapped between embarrassment and the inability to talk back to the family patriarch. Rose clutched John’s arm with white knuckles, both looking like they wanted to melt into the floor.
Joseph wasn’t done. He swept his gaze across everyone, landing finally on Mike and Jenny. “Even if Anna doesn’t make it–which I’m not hoping for–don’t you dare try pinning this on my granddaughter”
The threat hung in the air, impossible to miss. Old man Joseph might walk with a cane, but nobody doubted his ability to make good on his promises.
Awkward silence fell over the group. Nathan stood slightly apart, his brow furrowed as he watched Irene with her children. Something about the scene made him reevaluate everything he’d assumed about her. This wasn’t some gold–digging interloper–this was a self–sufficient woman with her own support system
“Irene,” Joseph said, his voice softening as he reached for her hand. Let’s bail. I’ve had enough of this circus.”
That small gesture–him reaching out, calling himself her grandfather–hit Irene right in the chest. She stepped forward, taking his arm with a gentle squeeze.
Adam hadn’t bothered acknowledging any of the Sterlings or Veins. Throughout the whole confrontation, his expression had remained coolly indifferent, like these people weren’t even worth his attention. Thomas, meanwhile, surveyed the group with undisguised contempt after piecing together what had happened.
These people picked a drama queen over Dr. Sterling? Thomas thought in disbelief. Talk about being blind. Hope they never need her help later, because that’s going to backfire big time.
The small group headed for the exit, leaving behind a stunned audience still processing what had just happened.
In the car, the triplets watched Irene’s silent profile with worried eyes. She hadn’t said a word since leaving the hospital, her expression unreadable. Alex reached out and patted her back awkwardly, mimicking how she comforted him when he was sick.
“Mom, don’t let those trash people mess with your head,” he said softly.
