Chapter 100

Irene pushed through the hospital corridor, her mind still stuck on chard’s pathetic attempt to act friendly after everything he’d done. She shoved those thoughts aside as she approached Brandon’s room, her strides purposeful and quick.

Katherine glanced up from her tablet when Irene walked in, giving her a subtle hod. No mask, no cap–today Irene wasn’t bothering with her Dr. Joy disguise around Brandon.

“How are you feeling today?” Irene asked, getting straight to the point.

Brandon looked up from his phone, his face brightening. Not too bad. Just lying here so long I swear my bones are starting to rust.”

His eyes drifted momentarily, and Irene caught that familiar look of caged athlete. Henry had mentioned how Brandon lived for the adrenaline rush of racing–always moving, always chasing the next curve. Being stuck in bed must be his personal hell.

“Excuse me?” Irene’s eyes narrowed instantly. “Please tell me you’re not thinking about getting out of bed. Did you forget your leg was shattered? No getting up until you’re fully recovered.”

The doctor in her voice left zero room for argument.

Brandon backed down with a quick “Fine,” though his fingers kept drumming a restless rhythm against the sheets.

“Brandon’s been on the racing circuit for years,” Henry jumped in, clearly worried Irene might read things wrong. “He’s just… not great at sitting still. Going from zero to sixty is his comfort zone, not the other way around.”

Irene shot a glance at Brandon, who was now trying to look like the model patient.

“Read a book. Watch Netflix. Play some games,” she suggested with a shrug. “Isn’t that what normal people do to kill time?”

Brandon nodded, then looked at her with unexpected eagerness. “Hey, when you’ve got a minute to spare, maybe you could hang out? I’d love to catch up.”

Irene felt her walls snap into place. She knew exactly what he wanted to discuss–the Sterling exit strategy, the Dr. Joy origin story. Hard pass.

“No time,” she replied flatly. What is it with everyone suddenly wanting pieces of me? Everyone’s so demanding these days.

If Brandon felt the sting of rejection, he didn’t show it. He switched tactics without missing a beat. “Then maybe bring those kids of yours by sometime? Grandfather can’t stop talking about them. I’ve got some collector’s edition racing models they’d flip for…”

The door swung open before Irene could respond. She went silent instantly, her body tensing as Richard strolled in like he owned the place. Her eyes tracked him while her face gave nothing away.

Brandon’s friendly vibe evaporated on the spot.

“Hello, I’m Richard Vein,” Richard announced, flashing his business smile as he extended his hand toward Brandon.

Recognition flickered across Brandon’s face. Thanks to his mother’s and Anna’s non–stop gossip sessions, he knew exactly who th guy was–the ex–fiancé who’d dumped Irene when the Sterlings kicked her out, then promptly got engaged to Anna.

Brandon gave him a deliberate once–over, his lips curling with barely disguised distaste. Decent suit, but truly terrible judgment.

“What brings you here?” Brandon asked after a pointed pause, his voice dropping several degrees.

Richard didn’t seem to notice the temperature change. “Heard you were back in town. Been meaning to visit, but work’s been crazy.

Finally made time today.”

As he spoke, Richard’s eyes kept sliding toward Irene. She looked transformed from the woman he remembered–radiating confidence that made her impossible to ignore. His lingering irritation from her earlier rejection seemed to fade slightly as he forced his gaze away.

Henty caught the whole interaction and shot Richard a knowing look Does this guy seriously think we don’t see right through him?

“How thoughtful of you, Mr. Vein.” Brandon’s words dripped sarcasm But don’t bother going out of your way. You broke things off with my sister, right? So there’s really nothing connecting our families anymore.”

Brandon’s face had gone cold, his expression suddenly mirroring Irene’s–both radiating that unmistakable Sterling frost.

Richard’s polished facade cracked, revealing obvious discomfort. “About that whole canceled engagement thing… that was definitely on the Vein family. I’m actually working on fixing things.”

Brandon let out a sharp laugh. “Don’t tell me you’re trying to get back with my sister.” His eyes narrowed. “Because last I checked, you were engaged to Anna.”

The accusation landed like a slap. Richard froze, his Adam’s apple bobbing as words failed him, eyes darting nervously.
