Chapter 1: Unexpected Pregnancy
Sterling Manor, Silver City – Five Years Ago
John Sterling burst into the medical suite, medical report clutched in his trembling hand. Behind him, Rose Sterling rushed in, her face already twisted with distress. “Explain this,” he demanded, slapping the papers down.
Irene Sterling felt her world crashing down around her. The routine pre-wedding medical check—required before her upcoming marriage to Richard Vein, heir to the Vein Corporation—had revealed the impossible. What should have been a mere formality before their high-profile wedding had turned into her worst nightmare.
“Dad, I don’t understand. There must be some mistake.” Her voice caught in her throat.
“A mistake?” John’s voice cut like ice. “The only mistake was thinking you could ever be worthy of the Sterling name. Pregnant? And you have the nerve to claim you’ve never been with Richard?”
Rose let out a dramatic sob, hand pressed to her chest. “We should never have brought her back. Anna was right about her all along!”
From the second-floor study, Anna Claire—the girl who had taken Irene’s place in the Sterling family for twenty years due to a hospital mix-up—watched with a smirk as her adopted sister’s life fell apart. Though she was now only the Sterlings’ adopted daughter while Irene was their true heir, Anna had spent six months carefully protecting her privileged position. Now fate had handed her the perfect weapon.
“I swear, I’ve never…” Irene’s protest died under her father’s fury.
“Enough!” John’s voice thundered through the room. “I’ve heard enough of your lies. First, you spend twenty years living with those fast food workers, and now this scandal? The Vein family already called off the engagement. Get out!”
By nightfall, the news had spread through Silver City’s social circles like wildfire. Notifications blew up Irene’s phone: “Sterling Heiress Pregnant Before Wedding – Father Unknown!” The headline blazed across every news outlet and social platform, each ping another nail in the coffin of her reputation.
Irene’s hands went instinctively to her stomach. “Dad, please…” The word felt strange on her tongue – she’d only been calling him that for six months. After twenty years with the Claires, believing they were her real parents, discovering her true identity had seemed like a miracle. Now it was a nightmare.
“Don’t.” John’s voice dropped dangerously. “Don’t you dare call me that. Irene Sterling, take your bastard child and get out. As of today, you’re no longer my daughter!”
His words hit her like a physical blow. Everything she’d gained in the past six months – her family, her identity, her place in the world – was being ripped away.
Above, Anna’s lips curved into a satisfied smile. The scandal would cement her position as the Sterlings’ favored daughter, despite the truth about their switched identities coming to light six months ago. Even better, word was already getting around that Richard Vein, her sister’s ex-fiancé, was now showing interest in Anna herself.
With nowhere else to go, Irene returned to the modest suburban house where she’d grown up. The place that had been home for twenty years now felt strange, its familiar walls cold and unwelcoming. Mr. and Mrs. Claire—the fast-food workers who had raised her as their own—couldn’t even look her in the eye.
“You’re not our daughter anymore,” Mrs. Claire said, fidgeting with her apron. “You’re a Sterling now. And in your condition…” She waved vaguely at Irene’s stomach, her face pinched with disappointment.
Mr. Claire simply turned away, shoulders stiff. “We can’t help you. What would people think? You’ve brought enough shame to this family.”
Irene stood on their doorstep, the same steps where they’d hugged her goodbye six months ago, proudly sending their “daughter” off to claim her rightful place in the Sterling family. Now those same parents shut the door in her face, leaving her truly alone.
But fate had other plans. Two days later, as Irene sat in a cheap motel room wondering what to do next, someone knocked on her door. She opened it to find her grandfather—the Sterling family patriarch himself—standing there.
“My dear girl,” he said, his eyes warm with concern. He was the only one who had shown her genuine affection since her return to the Sterling family. Now, even in the midst of scandal, he showed up.
He pressed a thick envelope into her hands. “This should be enough to set you up comfortably in R Country until the children are born. I’ve arranged everything—an apartment, the best medical care.”
