“What’s that supposed to mean?” Mateo’s voice rose. “You’re saying you don’t trust Maddox either?”

“Mateo. Calm down.” Draven’s tone was steady. “It’s not just him. There’s an entire family behind him.”

That finally shut Mateo up.

He’d always been the loud, cheerful one in the group. But now, Sierra saw something she’d never seen on his face before—real pain.

Dickson, who had been sticking close to Mateo recently, looked uncomfortable too. “Mateo… it’s true. I was there when she spoke to Maddox. I heard it with my own ears.”

“Maddox admitted it.”

That was the final blow.

Sierra could understand how Mateo felt. She’d only known Maddox for a short time, and even she felt betrayed. For Mateo, who had grown up with him, it must’ve been unbearable.

The room fell silent.

Just then, Sierra’s phone rang.

It was Johnathan.

He got right to the point. “I’m on my way back now. I’ll be home tonight.”

“Good. Be careful.” She hesitated, then added, “Maddox came by earlier.”

From the way she spoke, Johnathan instantly understood.

“I know,” he said. “We’ll talk when I get back.”

“Mateo’s not taking it well,” Sierra said softly. “He and Draven are still here. Can you speak to them?”

“I’ll talk to them when I return.”

“Okay.”

After hanging up, Sierra let the two men know Johnathan would be home that evening.

Mateo didn’t react. Draven just nodded.

Seeing them like this, Sierra didn’t say anything more. She told the butler to prepare dinner.

Johnathan didn’t return until after nine.

Mateo and Draven had been waiting for him the whole time. When he finally arrived, Mateo instinctively stood up. He wanted to talk about Maddox—but the words didn’t come.

“I’m going to eat something first. We’ll talk while I eat,” Johnathan said.

Mateo and Draven had already eaten, but they sat with him anyway.
