“Hmph.”
Wayne let out a cold snort, still visibly displeased.

His eldest grandson–the future head of the Wynn family–had nearly been taken on their own turf. It was disgraceful. If word got out, it’d be a laughingstock.
The Wynn family had kept a low profile for too long. People had started forgetting just how powerful they really were.
Well, it was time to remind them.
Wayne would handle that himself. As for Johnathan,,Sierra accompanied him back to the
estate.
Chase didn’t go with them. He stopped Johnathan with a serious look and said, “Leave this to me. I’ll find out who was behind it.”
For once, Johnathan didn’t fire back. He simply looked at Chase–and that was enough to make the man feel oddly relieved.
He offered a stiff, awkward parting line: “Get some rest. Don’t try to play hero.”
Then he hurried off, clearly afraid Johnathan might change his mind and start arguing.
Johnathan watched his retreating back, and to everyone’s surprise–including his own–he actually smiled.
A real smile.
The day had been exhausting. Wayne didn’t ask Johnathan for details. Instead, he simply told everyone to rest.
Later that night, when it was just the two of them, Sierra gently hugged Johnathan.
“You scared me to death today.”
“You scared me first,” Johnathan replied, holding her just as tightly.
He’d nearly lost it when he saw the red laser sight land on her. That moment had frozen him. in terror.
They stayed quiet for a while. Then Sierra finally spoke.

“They were after you
“It’s because of the drugs, isn’t it?”
“Most likely”
Johnathan let out a crooked laugh. “I really miscalculated.”
“They knew you wouldn’t cooperate if they took someone like you,” he said. “They needed someone like me.”
That phrase–someone like me–hit Sierra the wrong way.
She knew exactly what he meant, and she hated it.
“What do you mean, someone like you? What kind of person are you?”
Johnathan, you’ve got a soft heart too.”
Back when their car was tampered with, he’d chosen to risk his own life rather than harm innocent bystanders.
It’s when you’re staring death in the face that your true character shows.
She was done listening to him put himself down.
Her words caught him off guard, stirring something deep inside. He wanted so badly to pull her close and forget the rest of the world–but he knew Sierra wouldn’t allow that tonight. And his body, still healing, wouldn’t handle it either.
That only frustrated him more. He’d already given the order: the man who had punched him was not to be killed.
Johnathan would handle him personally.
Sierra, drained from the day’s stress, fell asleep mid–conversation. Watching her peaceful face, Johnathan leaned down and placed a kiss on her cheek.
A wave of cold fear lingered in his chest.
Thank goodness the target had been him—not her.
Which meant his entire strategy had to change.
He had been cautious before, too afraid to act recklessly for fear of putting Sierra in danger.
But now that he knew he was the true target–he didn’t need to hold back.

If they thought he was easy to corner, it was time they saw what he was really capable of.
While Sierra slept, Johnathan forced himself upright into his wheelchair and rolled onto the balcony, where he spent hours making phone calls.
