Chapter 229
‘If I don’t handle this right, he’ll think I’ve just been messing with him.
‘The best course now is to keep up the charade.
Both silently agreed to keep up the charade.
Brada was gradually coming to terms with the fact that he’d have to undergo another round of acupuncture treatment tomorrow. Looking at Skylar with hopeful eyes, he asked, “Skylar, if it’s not too much trouble, could you bring me some soup tomorrow? I’ve been craving your family’s special recipe.”
Skylar nodded with a smile. “Of course I can.”
Just thinking about next time, not only savoring some soup, but also getting to spend time alone with Skylar, Brada felt his inner anguish melt away.
Skylar didn’t stay long. After chatting with him for a while, she headed back.
The next day, Skylar, just as she’d promised, brought soup to Brada.
Brada lay on the bed, weakly turning his head to look at Skylar.
Skylar poured the chicken soup into a plate, picked it up, and handed it to Brada. With a teasing smile, she said, “Here’s the soup you’ve been dreaming about. Go on, drink up!”
Brada’s eyes sparkled with mischief as he put on his most pitiful look and lifted his limp hand with feigned weakness. “My hands are too weak,” he said in a plaintive tone, “Could you… feed me?”
Skylar’s gaze shifted to Chris. “Why don’t you feed him?” she suggested.
Chris was just about to take the plate when Brada let out a deliberate cough. For a moment, Chris didn’t catch on.
When Chris met Brada’s gaze, he noticed a coldness in her eyes.
Chris immediately picked up on his meaning and, flustered, blurted out an excuse. “Sorry, I just remembered something urgent I need to take care of,” he said, backing away in a hurry, “Ms. Lambert, would you mind feeding him? Thank you
ever so much.”
As soon as he finished speaking, he bolted out of the ward like a bat out of hell, as if demons were chasing him.
With Chris gone, feeding Brada the soup became Skylar’s job.
Skylar hesitated, feeling a bit awkward. Maybe I should call a nurse to help you instead?” she suggested, thinking to herself, ‘Feeding him soup just feels way too personal…‘
Brada protested weakly, “Their stares are downright predatory. I’d really rather not interact with them.”
Skylar fell silent for a moment.
“If you don’t want to, just forget it,” Brada said weakly, pressing a fist to his mouth as he broke into exaggerated coughing

fits.
Skylar finally relented.
Skylar lifted the plate and was just about to feed Brada when a clear, ringing voice cut through the moment.
Just then, Adam walked in with Yosef.
Adam quickly took in the situation, tugged his dad over to the window, and chirped brightly, “Daddy, you feed Brada the soup!”
Unable to stand the thought of Skylar feeding another man, Yosef quickly took the plate from her hands, scooped up a spoonful, and held it to Brada’s lips.
Brada stubbornly kept his mouth shut, refusing to accept the soup Yosef offered, leaving the spoon hanging awkwardly between them.
“Mommy, why isn’t Brada drinking the soup?” Adam asked innocently, “Doesn’t he like our family’s chicken soup? Then why did he ask you to bring it?”
Brada fumbled, “No, no, it’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just… just…”
He thought, ‘How was I supposed to explain this to a little kid? I couldn’t exactly say, right in front of him, “Sorry, I don’t get along with your dad, so I don’t want to drink the soup he’s offering.““”
Looking at things now, Adam was clearly on his father’s side. If he lost Adam’s favor at a time like this, his path to winning Skylar’s heart would become ten times harder.
Brada thought, ‘Man, this is just way too weird, two grown men acting like this…‘
