Xiao Yeyang has been quite busy recently, and by the time he returned to the estate, the sky had already darkened.
"Where is the Princess Consort?"
After entering the room, Xiao Yeyang discovered that Daohua was unexpectedly absent.
Lixia quickly came forward and reported the events of the day: "The Little Prince is currently residing in Laiyi Hall. The Princess Consort has just gone there with a food box."
Upon learning that his eldest son dared to swim in the Hucheng River on his own, Xiao Yeyang was startled and then strode out of the room.
When Xiao Yeyang arrived at Laiyi Hall, he saw Gu Jian standing outside the chamber, craning his neck as if eavesdropping.
Xiao Moreng stood by his side, and upon seeing Xiao Yeyang, quickly came forward to pay respects.
Xiao Yeyang nodded and approached Gu Jian.
Gu Jian ’shushed’ and gestured for Xiao Yeyang to be quiet, then whispered, "Daozi is having a tiff with his mother."
Xiao Yeyang frowned: "He secretly went swimming in the river and still dares to act up?" Saying this, he attempted to enter the room.
Gu Jian intercepted him, displeased: "What are you going in there for? Don’t add fuel to the fire!" He glared at Xiao Yeyang, then continued to eavesdrop on the noise inside the room.
Xiao Yeyang, with no alternative, reluctantly joined in the eavesdropping.
In the room, Daozi lay on the bed, his back turned to Daohua who stood by the bed.
Gazing at her son on the bed, Daohua felt a headache and a sense of helplessness: "Today, you ran off to swim on your own. Tell me, did you do something wrong?"
Daozi ’hmphed’ and remained silent.
Daohua sighed deeply: "Yes, Mother was a bit too angry today, but Mother was like this because she’s worried about your safety."
Daozi’s sullen face eased somewhat, and he sat up with a hmph, pouting at Daohua: "Mother, was your temper just a ’bit’ too big today? You yelled at me in front of so many people; do I have no dignity at all?"
Daohua, with a headache, covered her head: "Dignity is something one gives oneself. If you don’t make mistakes, would Mother scold you? The reason you lose face is entirely your own fault."
Feeling outargued, Daozi lay back down, turning his back on Daohua again.
Seeing this, Daohua was somewhat exhausted. She realized that her lively and cute eldest son was rapidly becoming a naughty child.
Daohua sat by the bed, patiently spoke: "The Hucheng River is so deep and wide, you are still so young, what if something happened? Do you know how worried Mother would be?"
Daozi pouted, muttering: "Anyway, you have brothers and sisters now, even if I’m gone, you wouldn’t be sad or in pain."
This stunned Daohua, and even Gu Jian and Xiao Yeyang outside eavesdropping were taken aback.
Daohua, realizing her son’s emotions were off, forcefully pulled him up to face her: "Daozi, how could you have such thoughts just now?"
Daozi’s eyes reddened: "Isn’t it true? Ever since the arrival of brothers and sisters, you all don’t like me anymore."
Daohua was taken aback, then after a long moment, she finally spoke: "How could Mother not like you?"
Daozi wiped away his tears: "You just don’t like me anymore. I can feel it, and everyone says so. I don’t like you all either now. Let’s just live our separate lives."
After finishing speaking, he shrugged off Daohua’s hand, lay back down, and this time directly pulled the blanket over himself.
Daozi buried his head in Daohua’s neck, wiping away tears while muttering, "If you do it again next time, I won’t forgive you."
Hearing this, Daohua felt relieved. Her Daozi was magnanimous after all. She smiled and said, "We won’t, your father and I love you very much, Daozi. Don’t misunderstand us anymore."
Daozi nodded, his head on Daohua’s shoulder.
Daohua continued: "Although I’m an adult, adults can make mistakes too. If you notice I’ve done something wrong, you should remind me in time."
"For instance, after your brother and sister were born, if you felt overlooked by me and were unhappy, you should tell me. Only then can I understand how you’re feeling. If you don’t speak up and keep it all to yourself, how could I possibly know?"
Daozi mumbled: "I was embarrassed."
Daohua couldn’t help but chuckle: "I’m your mother, and you’re my son; what’s there to be embarrassed about? You used to share everything with me. Have you forgotten?"
Daozi looked up at Daohua: "What if I say I’m unhappy and you think I don’t care for my brother and sister and then like me even less?"
Daohua: "Why your father and I would like you any less because of your brother and sister? Don’t you trust us?"
Daozi pouted: "That’s what everyone says."
Hearing this, Daohua’s eyes darkened: "Many people told you that your father and mother wouldn’t like you as much because of your brother and sister?"
Daozi nodded: "Xiao Mobao and the others said so."
Daohua hugged Daozi again: "That will never be the case. Your father and I will always love you. Daozi, as you grow up bit by bit, you will meet more and more people. You must learn to discern the truth in what others say."
