I had never seen Jonathan, who was always so cold and indifferent, lose control like that. I just
stood there and let them fight.
I wasn’t about to waste my energy playing peacemaker. They were both being childish.
I shook my head and went straight back to the office.
What I didn’t expect was that Jonathan was faster than me. By the time I got to the front of the office building, he was already there waiting.
There was a faint bruise at the corner of his lips, but his eyes lit up when he saw me. “I’ll come. pick you up after work,” he said. 1
I looked at the bruise, and Jonathan shifted awkwardly under my gaze. “Don’t worry, I’m fine. He took the worst of it.”
I scoffed. “Who said I was worried about you? Don’t flatter yourself.”
Jonathan’s expression darkened, but he still said, “I’ll come pick you up after work.”
I was running out of patience. “I said I want a divorce. Which part of that don’t you understand?”
Jonathan looked genuinely hurt and lowered his voice. “Elise, you lost your memory, and that’s why you don’t remember how you used to feel about me. Once you remember, everything will be
different…”
“Why would I want to remember? Just because you and Alicia weren’t having an affair? That
doesn’t erase everything I went through, and it won’t change my decision to divorce you. Or do you think once I remember, I’ll turn back into that pathetic woman I used to be, the one who forgave you the second you lifted a finger?”
Jonathan’s voice came out hoarse. “I never thought like that…
