“Let’s transfer Leon to another school. His identity’s been exposed,” Sean said, his voice calm but firm.
I let out a soft sigh and nodded.
We’d picked a regular kindergarten for a reason ”
Sean and I wanted Leon to experience a childhood close to normal, one not defined by the Mercer name or the pressure of the world watching his every move. We hoped he would grow up laughing over spilled paint and scraped knees, not worried about media headlines or whispered gossip.
But just like that, on his very first day, Bradley ruined it all.
Sean looked around the crowd, his face unreadable but his voice steady and commanding. His unsettling calmness often pierced more than any shouted words.
“Today was my son’s first day of kindergarten,” he said. “From this moment on, every child at this school will be considered his classmate. I won’t be holding anyone accountable for what happened today…”
He paused, letting that statement sink in.
“But for anyone who’s seen enough and still can’t keep their mouth shut, if I hear so much as a whisper…”
Another pause, and his voice turned sharper and colder.”
“All of you will regret it.”
That one word was all it took for the crowd to disperse immediately.”
People ducked their heads and hunched their shoulders, acting as if nothing had occurred, as they shuffled back toward the school gates.
Without saying another word, Sean turned to me, gently scooped me up in his arms, and carried me straight to the car. He always did things like this–without theatrics, without asking, just steady and sure, as if it were second nature.
He eased me into the backseat of the smog–blue Maybach, the one made just for him, Presidential Edition. Custom–built by his close friend.E
It was a beast of a car, elegant but reinforced, sleek yet undeniably powerful, Leon had spotted it from down the street. because it stood out, just as Sean always did.
I held Leon gently in my lap, giving a soft kiss to his flushed little cheek. His skin was warm, and his breathing still unsteady from all the crying, but he was okay. We were okay.
The image of him standing alone in the middle of the road, waving his tiny arms and screaming for help, kept replaying in my mind like a broken record.
That moment had shaken me in a way I wasn’t ready to admit, not even to myself.”
Sean had always taught Leon to look after Mommy and his little sister, Leila. And today, even though he barely understood what was happening, he still tried. He did everything he could to protect me.”
My heart swelled with pride and pain, all tangled together.
Leon was just a little boy. But today, he was also my hero.”
Bradley’s POV
Up ahead, the driver tapped the horn once.
Sabrina and I were still in the middle of the damn road, standing there like fools.
Right on cue, she muttered under her breath, all bitter and sulky, “What’s so special about the Mercers anyway…”
I didn’t even let her finish. My hand shot out and clamped over her mouth.
“Shut it, I hissed.
My eyes cut sideways at her, sharp and warning.
“This isn’t Brooklyn Heights.”
Sabrina blinked fast, and her eyes started filling with tears.
“Bradley… are you really yelling at me right now?”
I didn’t answer. What was there to say?!!
I just grabbed her arm and yanked her toward our car.X
Sean’s words were still ringing in my head, heavy and cold: ‘Harbor City doesn’t welcome you.
And that was a serious threat.!!
9:10 AM P P
If we didn’t leave quickly, I had no idea what would happen next, but I was certain it wouldn’t be pretty.
I
Back in the car, Sabrina latched onto my arm like a leech. Her voice went small and shaky.”
“You’ve never yelled at me before. Now you’re doing it because of her? Because of that bitch Leslie? What’s so great about her, or the Mercers? Just because they drive some flashy, overpriced car-”
I pushed her away and brushed off my sleeve in disgust.
“Sabrina,” I said, my voice ice cold, “did I spoil you too much that you actually forgot who you are?“%
I leaned closer, narrowing my eyes. “You were a scholarship student. A charity case. Now you’ve got the nerve to talk like that about the Mercers?‘
Sabrina shrank back, finally sensing the change.!!!
“You really think you can mouth off about them and walk away clean?” I kept going, reminding her of her place. “People who cross the Mercers don’t even know what hit them.”
Then, her face turned white.
That finally did it. The panic sank in. Sabrina finally grasped the gravity of her actions toward Leslie.
Her voice dropped to a whisper as she replied, “Bradley, if I did anything… if I offended them in some way, what’s gonna happen to me?”
I stared at her, and a sudden realization him me.
Sabrina’s words from earlier replayed in my head like a gunshot: ‘Why didn’t you die in that car crash five years ago?“”
