Kylo was hurting, that much was obvious. He brought up how he knew about Isleen and him but that wasn’t what upset him the most.
Dew... So that was the name of the dead fairy girl? And she was Kylo’s mate? It all made sense now... The vampire killed Dew to get to Kylo. She was a distraction.
But how could he explain that to his son when he looked so bent on killing him?
At the end of Kylo’s lamentation on all the ways Rhett had failed him as a father, the latter felt regret. He should’ve been there more for Kylo’s growth, maybe then he wouldn’t have been easily manipulated.
When he noticed how emotional Kylo was getting, he took the opportunity. "And I hope you can forgive me for what I’m about to do..."
Not waiting for Kylo—who was now standing just inches away from his table—to make a move, Rhett sent a mental signal to Aceco through the magic link she’d created between him and her.
He watched as Kylo was held in place by Aceco’s magic, forcing him to kneel and drop the dagger quickly.
Suddenly, Aceco appeared at a corner of the office, revealing that she’d been using some sort of invisibility spell to hide there all along. She stepped away from the corner, her wings fluttering behind her as she looked down on Kylo pitifully.
"It seems we were right after all, Gamma Rhett. The vampire’s plan all this while was getting to Kylo." Aceco voiced with a wry smile.
However, Rhett simply acknowledged her with a nod as he quickly brought out his phone. The first thing he saw was several missed calls from Isleen.
His heart dropped just then. What if Fergus’s way of getting to him was killing Isleen? Or... Worst?
He gritted his teeth as he turned to Aceco. "Fergus is alone right now. With Isleen. Something is wrong, I have to go."
Aceco opened her mouth to say something but was interrupted by Rhett’s phone ringing. He picked it up without checking who it was and his shoulders fell in relief when he heard Isleen’s voice at the other end.
"Isleen! What’s happening? Where are you right now?" He asked, his face getting sweaty as he paced around. He dabbed off some sweat with the back of his palm as he anticipated her response.
Isleen spoke with a whisper. "I–I’m being hunted by Fergus. He... He tried... He almost..." It seemed she couldn’t bring herself to say it as her voice shook.
Rhett glanced at Aceco who gave him a nod. He quickly headed for the door but not after giving Kylo one final look. The boy... His poor boy knelt there pitifully, not even sparing him a glance.
Rhett shook his head before rushing out of the office.
"Isleen, I want you to tell me where exactly you are. Concentrate and observe your surroundings." Rhett spoke to her calmly as he navigated his way through the precinct.
Isleen drew in a deep breath before responding. "Uhh... I just walked past a thrift store. J– Jamie’s thrift store." She read out the signpost.
Rhett nodded to himself. Perfect.
Soon enough, Rhett got in front of the burning warehouse, ignoring the heat that hit his face from this distance. He dialed Isleen’s number again, his heart rate increasing as he feared the worst.
Isleen couldn’t have sacrificed herself, right?
Just when he was about to hang up on the call he initiated, someone picked it up. He hesitantly raised it to his ear, waiting anxiously to hear a voice. Her voice.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity of silence, she spoke. "I– I did it, Rhett." Her voice came from the other end.
However, the voice sounded oddly close. Rhett turned back and almost dropped his phone at the sight before him.
There stood Isleen, waving at him with a weak smile on her face. Her body was stained with ash but that didn’t in any way diminish her beauty in Rhett’s eyes.
Rhett rushed to her, pulling her into his embrace. "Why did you do something so stupid? You could’ve gotten yourself killed." He didn’t forget to scold her when he pulled her out of the embrace.
She simply smiled before replying. "But I’m not now, am I?"
Rhett shook his head, a soft chuckle escaping his lips as he held her waist and kissed her, ignoring the raging fire behind them.
