Sleeping didn’t seem to be an option that night, so Rhett instead spent his time working on another case.
He and Farkas had concluded that there was a high-ranked traitor in their midst a while back, and Rhett had suspected Beta Darius... Before his death.
After reporting the Beta’s death to Alpha Beowulf, he noticed something off about him and began suspecting that he was the traitor.
However, with everything he’d discovered today, he was beginning to rethink that as well.
"Fergus..." He muttered to himself as he drummed his fingers on his table.
A vampire so cunning that he’d kept himself hidden in their midst all this while without arousing any suspicions. Rhett felt like there was more to him than meets the eye.
The night of the last vampire attack, someone had definitely informed the vampires of their moon festival. It wasn’t a coincidence, it was a pre-meditated attack. If this traitor was ignored and allowed to live, then their plans for the war would be in jeopardy.
"What if I’ve been looking at things from the wrong angle?" Rhett mused as he stood up, trying to piece things together.
He needed to think like the traitor. If he were a traitor working with the vampires, what would be his gain? What promise could they use to rile him in?
"Power..." He answered his own question as the picture he was trying desperately to paint started getting clearer.
Rhett had one person in mind but he shook his head in doubt. If truly they were the traitor and they were in this for power... Then it meant he’d failed. He’d put his trust so much in this person.
"If the Alpha were the traitor, wouldn’t he have alerted the vampires of the fairy Queen’s arrival and find a way to easily get them into the pack to kill her?" He thought out loud.
It just didn’t make sense. Alpha Beowulf was a suspicious and secretive man no doubt, but he didn’t look like the kind who’d do something like this. He was literally at the top of the food chain within the pack.
Rhett drew in a deep breath. He’d have to keep his suspicions to himself for now and keep tabs on the person he had in mind.
.
.
The next morning, the pack was woken up with terrible news. A fairy girl who worked at the Aurora Hotel was murdered.
Rhett had to mobilize some pack soldiers and drive with them to the scene. Luckily, Farkas was already there with some pack soldiers, who’d closed off the hotel from the civilians.
"Farkas." Rhett blurted when he pulled over and stepped down from the car. "What is the situation?"
Rhett wasn’t sure of the answer to that as well, but he had a feeling that this murder was done to throw them off balance. And if there was anything he’d learned in his years as Gamma... It was to always trust his instincts.
He turned to leave, not seeing any reason for him being there. However, he paused and gave Farkas an order. "Inform the reporters that I’ve concluded that this is a vampire attack. Also, release a statement telling the people to stay indoors as much as possible."
Rhett didn’t wait to see Farkas’s reaction and exited the room. He got downstairs soon enough and avoided answering the questions of the press gathered outside the hotel.
He hopped into his car and zoomed off to the precinct. When he got there, he went straight for his office, planning to make a call to Isleen.
He couldn’t take it anymore, she needed to leave that house immediately. He tried calling her but for some reason, she wasn’t picking up.
Just when he was about to call her again, he caught a scent coming from outside his office door. His brows creased into a frown just as his door was open from the outside and in came Kylo.
"K– Kylo? What are you doing here?" He raised his head away from the files on his desk and asked.
However, things went south quickly when his son drew out a dagger and pointed it at his face. Rhett remembered the fairy Queen’s words just then...
"Only someone of your blood can kill you."
