Stella was about to leave when the security guards moved in to kick them out. Monroe pulled Anna into his arms. “Who dares to touch her?”
The security guards had received Stella’s orders and were prepared to lay hands not only on Anna but on Monroe too. Anna quickly tugged at Monroe’s arm. “Forget it. Let’s go.”
Monroe led Anna away from the Hayes Group. Worried about her, he checked her over to see if she was hurt. But Anna wasn’t concerned about herself; she was checking Monroe instead.
“Monroe, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault; they didn’t even show you any respect,” she said.
“Stella has gone too far. Your grandmother’s death definitely has something to do with her. Now that Mrs. Hayes is gone, she thinks she can do whatever she wants. I’ll make sure she pays for this,” Monroe said.
“Don’t. Your family never liked me anyway. If they find out you’re doing this for me, they’ll blame you. Maybe they will revoke your position because of me. I don’t want you to sacrifice so much for me,” Anna said.
“Don’t say that,” Monroe said. He gently cupped Anna’s face. “From the day you agreed to be with me, I swore I’d always put you first, no matter what. I’ll never let them hurt you.”
Anna felt her heart melt. Even though she thought Monroe was such an idiot sometimes, she loved every second of this feeling.
She had never felt anything like this when she was with Lionel. Right now, being treasured like this was the best feeling ever; nothing could
compare.
Monroe needed to head back to the office, but he wanted to make sure Anna got home safely first. Yet when he looked up, he saw Lionel standing there. He had no idea when Lionel had shown up.
Monroe could never bring himself to like Lionel. Lionel glanced at Anna. “Can we talk?”
Anna held tightly onto Monroe’s hand. “Go ahead and say whatever you want. Monroe’s not an outsider.”
“Are you sure?” Lionel didn’t look too pleased.
Anna insisted, “Yes. Very sure.”
Lionel didn’t seem to care if Monroe was there or not. He just asked, “What happened to Mrs. Hayes?”
Monroe’s face darkened. “You don’t go ask Stella, but you come to Anna instead? Weren’t you her fiancé before? Who do you think you are?”
Lionel didn’t miss the look that flashed across Anna’s face. He glanced at Monroe, and then turned back to Anna. “What are you going to do about your parents and Max?”
“You can ask me, not her. And besides, you two are no longer engaged. Her business has nothing to do with you. I’m her boyfriend, so you’d better stay out of it,” Monroe said.
Lionel said nothing, just staring at Anna. Anna felt uneasy under his gaze. She tugged on Monroe’s arm. “Monroe, wait for me over there. I need to talk to him alone for a minute.”
“He might hurt you,” Monroe said, clearly worried.
Anna shook her head, “He won’t. Plus, you’ll be right nearby. Just keep watching from over there. If he does anything, you can come right over.” Monroe nodded. He shot Lionel a warning look before walking off.

Chapter 146
Lionel let out a faint smile. “So in the end, you still couldn’t resist making him leave? What did you say to him? Is he just another guy you’re stringing along?”
“Lionel, I don’t get what you’re saying. I know breaking up was my fault, but you know my family’s situation; you couldn’t help much. My parents love me a lot; I can’t leave them,” Anna said.
“So your idea of helping them is just running to Monroe? What has he done for you? Your parents and Max have already been transferred to another hospital. You didn’t know that?” Lionel pressed.
Anna replied, “I know, but I just started dating Monroe. I can’t bring myself to ask him for that kind of help so soon. Lionel, I don’t blame you. I know you’re in a tough spot, and I can’t help you either.
“I just hope you won’t hold it against me. Breaking off the engagement was something neither of us could help. But no matter what, I won’t abandon my parents or Max.”
To Lionel, it was like he didn’t even know Anna anymore; she felt like a total stranger, maybe even a little scary. He honestly had no clue why
he was thinking this way.
Anna deliberately put on a sad face. “You came to check on Stella, right? She and Eleanor were very close, so now that Eleanor is gone, Stella is hurting the most. But Lionel, Stella doesn’t need you anymore; she’s doing fine with Jordan now.”
“How did Mrs. Hayes die?” Lionel pressed. He stared at her, his gaze sharp and unyielding.
Anna froze, staring back at him in disbelief. “Lionel, I don’t get what you mean. Are you trying to say I had something to do with Eleanor’s death?”
“I don’t know, it’s just this weird feeling I can’t explain,” Lionel said. Even Lionel himself didn’t get why these thoughts kept popping up; he just couldn’t shake them.
“How could you even think that? Even if Eleanor didn’t like me, I’m still her own granddaughter! There’s no way I’d ever do something like that,” Anna exclaimed.
Even Lionel thought he was being ridiculous. He had no idea where these thoughts were coming from. Lionel gave Anna one last look, let out a heavy sigh, and said, “Take care of yourself.”
With that, he turned and left. Anna stood watching him leave. Does Lionel believe me? But why did he ever doubt me? How could he think I’d
do that?‘ she thought.
Monroe, still worried, quickly walked back over and pulled Anna into his arms. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
He felt her hand; it was ice–cold. Monroe grew even more anxious and started rubbing her hands between his palms, trying to warm herself
