Chapter 88 Pretending to Be Together
Before Ruby’s mother could even finish surgery, I suddenly got a call from Raelynn.
Her voice was choked with sobs on the other end. “The doctor said my mom is hemorrhaging–she’s almost gone!”
“What?!”
The first thought that flashed through my mind was that Andrix had done something. But I quickly realized how absurd that sounded.
With everyone else in the hospital at a loss, I had no choice but to go find Andrix myself.
“Andrix, can you save Ruby’s mom?”
I couldn’t hide the pleading in my voice–this was for Ruby’s mother.
“I told you before,” Andrix said, leaning forward with a smile, eyes fixed on my face, “I need a reason to save
someone.”
“What do you want? Just say it.”
Looking at that smug expression of his, I suddenly felt like I didn’t know him at all.
The Andrix I used to know wasn’t like this. He was easygoing and kind. Now, he looked like a sharp, calculating businessman.
“I want…” Andrix sighed deeply. “I want you.”
My eyes widened. “Why?”
He gave a sly smile. “I’ve liked you–probably longer than Aiden has.”
“You told me before you didn’t have feelings for me. Wouldn’t it make you uncomfortable to be with me?”
I couldn’t make sense of this man anymore.
He was acting so strangely. He claimed not to like me, yet insisted on claiming something that was never his to begin with.
Andrix’s gaze turned soft, almost affectionate. “How could I not like you? That was just an answer to your question. It doesn’t mean I don’t like you.”
“That’s not happening. I’ll agree to anything else–but not that.”
I felt nothing for Andrix. The idea of being with him was impossible.
“Anything else, and I’m not interested.” He stretched lazily. “Think it over. But I should warn you, that girl’s mother might not last much longer. You better decide quickly.”

Chapter 88 Pretending to Be Together
“You’re a doctor. How can you be this cold–blooded?” My voice turned icy, my anger surging at the smug look growing on his face.
“I’m a person first, then a doctor. People have desires. So do I.”
Just then, my phone rang violently. Ruby’s name flashed across the screen.
I took a deep breath. “Fine. I’ll do it.”
“You’d better not go back on your word after the surgery,” he said with a chuckle. “Post–op recovery is going to take at least three months.”
“I get it. So hurry up and go already.”
“Don’t be so fierce. I’m your boyfriend now, remember? You should be nicer to me.”
Andrix stretched again, then stood up. “Alright, I’m going now. Be good and wait for me.”
As he walked past, he pinched my cheek and left with a grin.
I immediately rubbed my face hard, feeling nothing but disgust.
But I needed his help. I couldn’t afford to turn him down.
We’d just saved Ruby’s mom–I couldn’t let her down now.
I went to the surgical waiting area.
Ruby was crying her heart out, and I reached out to hold her.
“My mom won’t leave me, right?”
“No. She’ll stay by your side. Always.”
The surgery lasted nearly ten hours. When Andrix finally walked out, it was already early the next morning.
He was still wearing his white coat. Even though he had a mask on, the exhaustion on his face was clear.
“The surgery’s over. It was a success. You don’t need to worry anymore.”
He smiled as he broke the news to Ruby.
Seeing her smile with relief, I finally felt the tension ease inside me too.
“Raelynn, come with me to the office,” Andrix said, turning his head, his eyes fixed on me.
“Alright.”
I followed him back to his office. He took off his white coat and changed into his regular clothes, then suddenly reached out and grabbed my hand.
I was startled and instinctively tried to pull away.
