A knock came at the door.

Solomon and I sat up straight.

The door opened, revealing Debra in simple jeans and a white blouse.

Her long hair was tied high. She looked sharp and clean.

"You, come with me," she said, crooking a finger at me.

"Me?" I pointed at myself.

"Yeah, you."

She turned and left.

I glanced at Solomon, and he nodded.

We both understood that she would not harm us.

I followed her out, but instead of heading to her room, she picked an empty one nearby.

I felt a twinge of nerves. "Why did you bring me here?"

"I checked. Arcane Academy has no record of you two." Her fingers tapped the table.

I held my breath under the weight of her words.

She stared at me. "Why did you lie?"

"We didn't. It's just..."

"Just what? You're from the future?"

I froze, disbelief washing over me.

"Bingo," she smiled. "The moment I saw you, I felt a connection. Like you were my kid."

"Mom..."
