Melanie suddenly raised her head, eyes full of tears. She shook her head and begged, “I want to be a real mom and a real woman.”

Heriberto stared at her, and a piece of memory flooded back to his mind. Three years ago, Melanie overdosed on abortion pills given by Iris and nearly bled to death. He could remember how Melanie was lying there, soaked in blood, barely alive.

If he had arrived a little later that night, Melanie wouldn’t have made it.

He owed her for that.

For three years, he tried everything to make it up to her.

He sent her to Oswalon and paid big money to get her into a music conservatory. He hired the best cello teachers for her and even funded her concerts.

Melanie didn’t just lose the baby and the womb.

Five years ago, in freezing weather, she even jumped into a river to save his life.

“Okay,” Heri said after a pause. He nodded. “Where did you get the womb? Is it from a legal, safe source?”

The moment he said yes, Melanie’s eyes lit up like stars. She was thrilled.

“Of course.”

She wiped away a tear and grabbed his hand again, smiling from ear to ear. “Heri, you’re so good to me. Having you in my life is the best thing ever.”

Heriberto gently pulled his hand back again, lowered his eyes, and gave a faint hum. “When’s the transplant?”

“In about a week.”

“Do you need anything from me before the surgery?” he asked.

Melanie shook her head. “No, you’re super busy. I’ve got it all covered. Just be at the hospital that day. That’s all I need.”

“Heri, as long as you’re there, I won’t be scared.” She gazed at him with deep affection.

Heriberto nodded. He was just about to say “okay” when a whole glass of ice water came flying straight at him.

It hit him perfectly and soaked him from head to toe.

Melanie shrieked and jumped up from her seat. She pointed at the woman who threw the water and screamed, “Who are you? What gives you the nerve to do that? Are you crazy?”

The woman’s eyes were cold and sharp like blades. She completely ignored Melanie and cursed at Heriberto.

“Heriberto, you scumbag! You’ve got a wife and still mess around like this? You’re the worst kind of trash!”
