The blood bag was full. The nurse carefully removed the needle as if handling a precious treasure.

Will this be enough?Gabrielle asked, her voice dry, as though her emotions had been drained with the blood.

It should be,the nurse replied with a reassuring smile.

As the surgical lights turned on, Gabrielle stood by the glass window watching the busy doctors, her heart filled with mixed feelings.

Twenty hours later, he finally opened his eyes.

The attending physician gripped Gabrielle’s hand in excitement. It’s a good thing we had your blood. Without it, he might not have made it.

Shortly after Timothy regained consciousness, his parents arrived at the hospital, their faces full of worry and exhaustion.

Jazlene Goldstein collapsed on the bed in tears. Emmitt Goldstein stood tall unmoved, his eyes cold and sharp. Have they identified the driver?

Timothy’s bodyguards all bowed their heads in silence.

Sitting up, Timothy shook his head and rasped, It was just an accident. Let it go.

Hearing his cover for Cecilia sent a jolt through Gabrielle’s heart.

Nonsense!Emmitt roared. Speeding like that on the road? That’s attempted murder! I’ll call my old friend at the Public Security Bureau. The case will be locked down solid!

Suddenly, Timothy grew agitated. He sat up too quickly and reopened his wound. Blood seeped through the gauze.

Gripping his father’s arm, he said forcefully, Drop it! I’m not pressing charges. Absolutely not.

Jazlene screamed and pressed the nurse call button when she saw how much he was bleeding. Emmitt’s eyes flickered with confusion and rage. Are you insane?

If you insist on pursuing it,Timothy said, eyes fixed on the window, his voice chilling. I’ll jump out of it right now.

Silence fell over the room. Emmitt’s face darkened before he finally

gave in. Do as you please.

Not long after the Goldsteins left, two police officers entered the ward.

The driver has been detained, one officer said, flipping open a notepad. Cecilia Palmer claimed that the brakes failed.

The car is mine. It was just an accident,Timothy said tiredly, closing his eyes.

We’ve found no evidence of brake malfunction. The officer pressed, Witnesses said that before the crash

I’m dropping the charges,Timothy cut him off and signed the statement of waiver.

After the officers left, only Gabrielle and Timothy remained.

Dusk settled outside, and the stark white light in the hospital room stung her eyes.

Why?Gabrielle finally summoned the courage to ask what had been burning in her chest. Her voice trembled.

Timothy avoided her gaze, feigning ignorance. What?

For the first time, Gabrielle felt a surge of fury. You know Cecilia. What exactly is your relationship with her?
