I hated how calmly she said it and yet Nikolai was seated here with me. He was totally silent, chewing the food but I could see it that he was getting affected by the words that were coming out of my parent’s mouth.

“Show a little bit more respect towards your parents! You seem to not care what others think about us. Well, we do. Having a child won’t make you vulnerable. In contrary, if you choose the right person you could get good advices and support, which will make you smarter and stronger-” Dad started explaining, but I interrupted him quickly.

“I have Nikolai to give me advices,” I retorted unnerved.

“Who gave you permission to talk and interrupt me?!“, He got irritated immediately.

And Nikolai can’t give you good advices, because he’s not in this business for as long as you. He wasn’t born into a serious mafia family. So, this isn’t an argument for me!” He hushed me angrily. “And concerning the third point you stated; We already found you a woman you’ll marry again.”

“What?!” I asked shocked.

“You already know her,” Mom said with a light smile.

“Who is she?” I questioned now, even more confused than before.

“It’s Leah,” Dad finally revealed after a moment of silence and the second I realized which name he just pronounced, I couldn’t contain myself anymore.

“I’m not gonna marry that bitch!” I exclaimed and jumped up from my seat with rage boiling inside my whole body.

“Alessandro!” Mom shouted at my insult.

“Leah is the perfect woman for you. Not only is she the mother of your son, but she was also born into a mafia and knows how everything works. Additionally, we could also make peace with one of our rivals, which is to everyone’s advantage, Dad explained calmly, which infuriated me even more.

Leah was cruel and manipulative, which was no surprise seeing the household she was coming from. Her whole family was just fucked up and I wouldn’t stand to be for more than a second with anyone of them in one room.

The fact that my parents really took my decision, who I was going to spend the rest of my life with was hilarious. They didn’t care about me. They just wanted their alliance with Leah’s family, that’s all.

“I.won’t.marry.her!” I stated my final. “Nikolai let’s get out of here“,

“Sit down, Alessandro,” my father ordered/his voice dangerously low.

I ignored him, pushing back my chair so hard it scraped against the marble floor. “I am done with this conversation,” I bit out. “If you think you can dictate my life, you are sorely mistaken.”

As soon as we got into the car, I slammed the door shut, gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white. My blood was still boiling from that disaster of a dinner. My father, my mother–both of them pushing me toward something I refused to accept.

Nikolai blinked, glancing down at his bare hand as if he hadn’t even noticed. His lips parted slightly before he closed them again, expression unreadable.

“I didn’t put it on,” he admitted quietly.
